Hello I am looking for information on my Greatgrandfather , John Cowan and his wife Mary Jane Savage. Both came from Armagh Ireland, John was born 1810 and Mary Jane Savage was born approximately 1818. John and Mary were married in 1837 at Hemmingford Quebec Canada. Possibly left Ireland 3 -4 years earlier. It appears that John's parents , John Cowan Sr. and his wife Ann Dixon also came to Hemmingford Quebec. My Cowan's may have been farmers in Ireland as they were always farmers here in Canada. I hope someone can help me find more about my family.

Hi Maggy
There is a baptism record of Mary Savage in Armagh 1825 on www.rootsireland.ie/
The only record for John Cowan is 1826 but the parents don't match your info.
You need to purchase credit to view the records on rootsireland.ie/ but they will have the parish and MAYBE the parents' names.
I couldn't find a marriage record of John & Ann

Thank you for your quick reply Col. I am not sure about the Mary Savage you found as in all Canadain documents her name is Mary Jane ,one birth of a child she signed with an X apparently she did not write. On three different census in Canada Mary Jane's birth date varries 1815,1816,and 1818 I have learnt that this is not uncommon in our census papers. Her age at her baptism in 1825 would be 7 , is this possible?

It is possible Maggie but unlikely unless she was converting perhaps.
