My ancestor Robert Brotherton (b. 1796) and his wife Anne (b. 1799) were born in Ireland along with thir 9 children. Robert and Anne and 7 of the 9 children came to the United States in 1846 on the Ship Ocean. The other two children followed about a year later. I have the names of all of the children if needed and the dates of their birth.
I searched the Griffiths Valuation Survey and found a James Brotherton at Townland: Tawnies Upper/t/clonakilty/old Chapel-La. (Parish Kilgarriff) I also found a Robert Brotherton at Knockskagh (Parish Kilgarriff). I understand that the Valuation Survey was between the years 1847 and 1864. My Robert Brotherton came to the USA in 1846.
Is there a recommendation on how to determine if my Robert Brotherton family came from one of the Brotherton families in Cork? I have also found a few more Brotherton families in other parts of Ireland but only these in the Giffiths Valuation.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Dear Robert
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.
It would be difficult to determine which of the Griffith?s entries can be linked to your ancestor. The only real way to do this is to gather as much information as possible in the hope that you could gather more information that you could use to rule one out. The ?Cancelled Books? kept in the Valuation Office in Dublin are a continuation of the Griffith?s Valuation. They show townland by townland who held the land and paid the valuation fee on it. Perhaps, if any of your ancestors remained, they may still hold the land or hold it through marriage. However, the Books are not available online. You could contact the Office for more information: https://www.valoff.ie/contact.html
Best of luck with your search

Clare,
Thanks for your response to my question. I have added the link for the valuation office to my favorites and will work on that angle soon. In the Griffith's Valuation, it shows the name of the person who is leasing the poperty and the person who owns the property. Do you know which person was responsible to pay the tax by law at that time? I am under the impression that in English law, the person who owned the property was the person responsible to pay any tax and the land owner then had to collect enough money through their lease with the tennant to pay for any taxes based on the valuation?

Hi Bob
Here is a nice explanation about the tax - if your holding was valued under ?5 you were exepmt, so the landlord had to pay in those cases:
