My 4th great grandmother was Jane McDowell from Parish of Ballyhalbert, County Down.  She was born on January 17, 1763.  Her father was Rev. Robert McDowell.  She had a sister, Isabel, and a brother, Robert.  She married Hugh Crawford around 1794.  She was baptized in Glastry Church, Parish of Ballyhalbert, County Down.  Jane McDowell Crawford and her husband, Hugh, emigrated to the United States in 1795 and resided in Carlisle, Pennsylvania until 1817 when they moved to Ohio Township near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where they bought a farm and lived until their deaths.

I am looking for information on Jane McDowell, her family and her marriage to Hugh Crawford.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church, so if Jane came from Glastry Presbyterian congregation, then that?s certainly where you would expect to find her marriage record. You are lucky because Glastry?s marriage records go back to 1750, so you should find a 1795 marriage, if that?s where they married.

PRONI has a copy of those Glastry marriage records. They are not on-line.  A personal visit is required to access them. (PRONI will do simple looks up for you, for a fee which is around ?15 for 15 minutes work, though you will obviously need to check that with them). You may find it cheaper to employ a private researcher.

I presume that Jane?s father was the Minister at Glastry. If so, the Presbyterian Historical Society should have details of his career, and may have some information on his family. Contact Valerie Adams on:

I see from Glastry Presbyterian church?s website, that if you are looking for records prior to 1921, you should contact PRONI. (That indicates they receive more genealogical requests than they can really cope with, and consequently want people to use the copies in PRONI).
