After many years of searching for confirmation of the birth of my great great grandfather, Thomas Doran, son of Pearse Doran in the parish and city of Dublin circa 1835, I have just discovered a baptism record in the register for Westland Row on 29 Oct. 1834: Thomas Percival Doran son of Pierce Doran and Mary, SS James Clarke and Mary Casey. Any help with other relevant records would be appreciated.

Hi Sandra,
It looks like Pierce was originally from Co. Wexford, he turns up in New Ross 1854 and dies there 1872.

Brendan's tips resulted in finding a death certificate and Griffith's Valuation records. I am now looking for clues to information about Pierce Doran's wife Mary. I first located her name on the baptism record for their son in 1834. Pierce's death certificate indicated that he was married at the time of his death (age 60) on 11 Feb 1872 at Ball Alley Lane in New Ross and a Mary Doran was present at his death.I am inferring that Mary Doran was his wife and searched the death and marriage indexes at the Office for Social Protection in Dublin last fall to try to find a record for Mary Doran in New Ross. Alas, it appears that there were a lot of civil registrations under the name Mary Doran for New Ross so I am back at a brick wall. Suggestions welcomed.

Hello Brendan,
Thank you very much for your advice. How did you narrow the field down to these two possibilities?
With appreciation,
Sandra

Hi Sandra,
They were the only Mary Doran deaths in New Ross with birth records in 1810's

I have obtained copies of the two death certificates Brendan identified (Many thanks!) One was registered in the district of Old Ross, the other in the district of New Ross. The death registered in 1876 occurred on 31 Dec. 1875 at the New Ross Work House. I suspect that this is the one I was looking for. A Catholic parish burial record for this period and location is not available on the National Library of Ireland microfilmed records so I am now trying to determine one exists for this (and if so, where?) and also whether New Ross work house records may be preserved somewhere. All suggestions welcomed.

Hello Sandra,
I have been a amateur researcher for over 25yrs.Most of my research has been done by hard work over the years. So it is great for researches now with the Web been so handy.
Anyway regarding your Workhouse records you might give the Local Library a go as that is where I was lucky to see the hard copies from the Workhouse in Birr Co Offley.I also got access to the Workhouse as well,it was a harrowing experience.
The records also gave a list of young girls who were Shipped to Australia, some as young as Twelve.
Regards,
Kaye.

Hi, of course there may have been other Mary Dorans. Some could have emigrated. Or deaths may have not been registered if they died young before the statutory registrations. I find findmypast.ie best for parish records. They seem to have better records. I believe they are free to search also. I have a mary doran formerly Guilfoyle in Cork. Married to a John doran. I also have correlated all the dorans I think in local parish at Pearce Street. Will take a look for it and come back to you.
