I am trying to trace my the Carrroll Irish relatives shown on the Liverpool Census Records. Please note that there appears to be different spelling of the surname on three consecutive census returns - on the 1881 Census the family name is shown as Caryl. On the 1891 the family name is shown as Cahill and in 1901 the family name was shown as Carroll which is the name used for the family from that date. So I'm not sure what would have been the irish version of the surname.
They are Terrance Caryl Born abt 1831 in Dublin He was shown as a foundry a labourer in Liverpool on the 1881 Census. He was shown as being 50 years old at the time of the census. He was shown as a widower at that point and was living with his son Thomas. Haven't found any record of the marriage in Liverpool as yet and may have married in Ireland before moving to Liverpool.
Thomas Caryl was also shown as being born in Dublin, born abt 1856 and was shown as a boiler maker labourer. He was married to Mary who was born in Liverpool abt 1857.Their children at that point were, Terrance, Thomas and Mary A all born in Liverpool.
Grateful for any assistance anyone can give. Many thanks.
Best Regards

You may want to look at www.irishgenealogy.ie which is an Irish goverment site which has baptismal and marriage records for Dublin. I would search for all three of your surnames. However, unless you know his parents names or at least one, how do you know you have the correct Thomas?

Hi Roger thanks for your response and advice. Confused about your second point though.
I know I have the correct Thomas. Thomas is the son of Terrance so I know that he is the father (shown on 1881 census) but the problem is I have no record of the wife of Terrance (Thomas's mother) who had died prior to the 1881 census.
I was hoping that, because Terrance and Thomas were both born in dublin, that there might be a better chance of picking up the family connection from other irish records.

Made a mistake. I was referring to the 1831 Terrance and who his father was. But since Terrance is a less common name, you have a better chance. In fact, I located this 1833 baptism at St. James.

This is brilliant and many thanks for identifying this record.. Are you confident that this is the right record? I would not have had any chance of finding this so I am extremely grateful for your help.
Would it be difficult to trace further records from here?
Best Regards

I have no way of confirming if this is the right record except it generally fits your info. The year of birth is two years off.
I would go to www.irishgenealogy.ie and see what else you can find. All the best!
