Flanagan, Malone, Quinn in Louth 1822-1864

firstly I am not the Carlingford volunteer but my wife if from there and she tells me there are Malones and Quinns there that she knows of but does not remember Flanagans, there is a website for Carlingford with lots of photos but I have checked in just now and the Gallery is not available but was available earlier this week but was down just previous week so keep looking see http://www.carlingfordpeople.ie

I have access to www.findmypast.ie which has civil index records for births, marriages and deaths. I assume your family were RC. Civil registration started in 1864 so you would need to find church records ( assuming they are available) for events prior to 1864. I found an index record for a birth for Anne Quinn in 1865 in the Ardee registration district which roughly covers the central part of Co. Louth. No guarantee that this record is for the daughter of your Mary Flanagan and John Quinn but the facts match.

You can get a copy of the actual birth record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. I added instructions for contacting the GRO below the index record. The actual birth record will show the names of the parents and where they lived in 1865. Feel free to ask more questions.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

Roger, Thank you for copying the information from findmypast on Anne Quinn.  I wonder if you recommend that site?  I'm using Ancestry.com and I've not been impressed with their Irish records.  I figured out how to fax my form to the Office of the Registrar General and have requested a copy of Anne's birth.  I appreciate your detailed instruction without which I would never have figured it out. 

On the off chance--I have McDonnells in my family from Colleras, Goleen, Schull, Cork. Patrick McDonnell b.c. 1825 and Hanora Mahoney b.c. 1825 had 6 children.  John b. 1852 stayed on the farm in Colleras, Goleen and all the siblings left Ireland and lived in Buffalo, NY.  The names are common, but you never know, we could be related.  The church records for Goleen are hard to find.

The Find My Past web site is very useful to me because I use it every day trying to assist folks who post on the Ireland XO message board. I'm not sure if the cost per year ( I forget if I paid $80 or so but I did get a discount) is worthwhile to someone who is only researching his or her family. Ancestry is adding more and more Irish records. Do you have the basic version or the world version? The world version has more Irish records.

My McDonnells come from East Mayo a little village on the Roscommon border called Carracastle. My grandfather came over to Philadelphia in 1907. I grew up in Philadelphia but now live near Baltimore.

First of all, thanks for the reply.  The chain of emails has lots of places to hunt and I will do that. A couple of other things I do know.

There is a marriage record for James and Catherine Mills but did not record Townland or witnesses. 

A search of the Records of the Roman Catholic parish of Cooley (I had a professional look for me a few years back) found 2 baptisms:

Rose daughter of Peter Flanagan and Mary McCabe in 1812

Peter son of John Flanigan and Mary McArdaragh in 1813

Since James was born in 1798 and married in 1820, it is possible that Peter and John could be brothers but obviously not proven.

I checked the Tithe Applotment Books and found Patt Flanagan in Bellagaw 

I checked Griffith and found a Peter Flanagan in Parish of Beaulieu, Townland of Ballinreask.  If traditional naming convention holds, James named his first son Peter, which would be his father's name. 

So, bits and pieces but nothing pulled together yet or confirmed. 

One last thing, I have a book by Peter Murphy called "Together in Exile".  It describes the migration of about 40 families from Louth to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada (one of which is my James Flanagan).  Great detail of those who migrated plus information about their children that stayed in Saint John. I would be happy to check if anyone is interested and had relatives in Saint John.

So, my GGG grandad was And (Andy) Malone (b 1810) from Louth/Carlingford , which means combined we might be on the road to working out just a bit more about our ancestry. For me, the road stops with And. He immigrated to the U.S. and came into Philadelphia with a young wife and a few children - one was born soon after arriving - Hugh Malone who became my GG grandad. As a young man, Hugh ultimately settled in Missouri where he bought into a sorghum mill and ultimately passed it on to his son, Jonathan.

Patrick,  Sorry, I don't have any further information that links with yours, although the proximity is interesting.  We will have to keep in touch and see what unfolds. 

I've got a different Anne Malone from the Cooley Peninsula, County Louth, in my family tree. Mine married Matthew Carroll in February 1847 in Rathcor and they had their first child, daughter Ellen, in March 1848 in Ovid, New York, US. 

A researcher in Carlingford helped me a few years ago and gave me baptismal records of 4 Ann Malones from Rathcor. Two of them are possibilities, born in 1816 and 1829, but the other two were too young to marry in 1847. I am not sure when my Anne Malone was born, but am certain she was not the Anne Malone born in 1840 to Daniel Malone and Margaret Flanigan. Could she be your ancestor? I'll be happy to send you a copy of the record I have.

Maryal, Thank you for this information.  I can't link my Ann Malone to any of these.  I think she may have been the one baptised Nov. 28 1814 in Darver, Louth daughter of Patt Malone and Brigid Kelledy. I have been unable to verify it. The place name is off s the family was supposed to be in Ardee. 

I appreciate your taking the time to send this and will keep it for reference.  I'm guessing that most of the Malones were genetically linked at some point. I just can't find that point.
