Three known descendants of Peter Smith (b. 1821, Cavan) have participated in Ancestry.com's DNA project.  If you have, too, contact me, and let's see if your results are among our matches.

  • Dear Patti

I hope you have some success and that anyone here who has participated will get in touch. Do you know where in Cavan your ancestors came from?

    Best wishes

  • No one has gotten in touch, unfortunately.  I do not know where in Cavan my ancestors came from.  My g-g-grandfather was born in Cavan in 1822 and left for Canada/US while still a child.  Family lore says he was orphaned on the way over.  I have a full record of him from marriage on (m. 1846- d. 1885), but no sources say more than "Cavan."  At one time, wasn't there an idea of having the longtime members of each parish do their DNA testing?  If I found a cluster of close DNA matches from a parish, I could work with that as a clue.  Name, unfortunately, doesn't help:  Peter Smith.  Born 24 November 1822, Cavan.  Is there a place that lists emigration of families from Cavan?  He ends up as a weaver/tailor in Canada... then a farmer.
