Hi, I'm new to this. I'm looking for information on the Stewart famil who lived and worked in Dublin. They had a Cobblers/Leather Shop on Lower Clanbrassil Street. The shop is long gone, but any informaton would be very much accpreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Duncan
I assume you are aware that this family is in the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census (free online)
I could not find the marriage of Anthony & Elizabeth on www.rootsireland.ie/ but you might like to try www.irishgenealogy.ie/ for the marriage and the children's births. The site seems to be down at the moment. If you get the marriage with Anthony's parents' names yo can go back another generation.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking around 1900 - 1940 I think. I know that John Stewart (my grand father) came to England either during or just before WW2

do you have any idea of first names and dates (even approximate) ?
I've had a look through some early 1900 directory listings and I've seen a couple of bootmakers/boot repairers on Lwr. Clanbrassil St., and also a Harness maker, but none with surname Stewart so far.
Directories would usually list the name of the principle person who ran the business, so would not include employees etc.

Do you have a marriage and or death cert for your grand father ?
An English death cert should give reported age (or date of birth on later certs) and a marriage cert should show his father's name and occupation to help confirm the connection back to his parents..
I''ve searched directories up to the 1940s, and no Stewart bootmakers/leather workers listed as businesses on Lower Clanbrassil St., but a couple of places on the street they could have been employed.
e.g. in 1938 a H. Atkin, bootmaker at 87, and an R. Spottiswoode harness maker and 109, and S. Milton & B. Corcoran boot repairers at 113.
On the 1939 voters list there are a number of Stewarts listed at Lwr. Clanbrassil, looks like they are living at no. 16, the same address mentioned on the 1911 census by ColCaff in the reply above
Anthony & Elizabeth Stewart
John Stewart
William & Anne StewartNumbers 14 to 17 are listed as tenements, which could account for the separate listings at no. 16 on the voters list. Also listed is a Joseph Stewart at No. 110, which appears to be next door to that harness maker I mentioned
