Looking for information about David and Margaret McCracken and their descendants from Killyleg, County Monaghan. David and Margaret lived in Killyleg, in parish of Aghabog. They had a son, Robert Henry, born 1824, in Killileg, who married Martha Crozier in Drum in Currin parish, 1851. Robert and Martha emigrated to New Zealand in 1865 with their family.

David McCrackin is listed in the 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing living in Killyleg.

I looked for a civil death index record for David in the Cootehill registration district with no success. Possibly David died 1861-1863 before civil registration started.

I did locate a possible death record for Margaret in 1876 9see below). You can get a copy of this record for around 4 euros from the General Register Office. if you plan to get a copy, let me know and I will forward instructions.

There were no McCrackens in Killyleg in the 1901 census. I did locate a William McCracken and family in Drumacreeve which is 2.7 kilometers to the east from Killyleg.

Thank you for your prompt response.  We have very little information about David and Margaret McCracken. We would like a copy of the death of Margaret McCracken in 1876. I would be grateful for information on how to get the record.

The instructions are below. The death record will show: date, location, cause of death, name of informant and in some situations the relationship of the informant to the deceased.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Thanks, Roger. I am requesting the certificate from New Zealand. I tried filling in the form online but it wouldn't accept my address. I then printed the form and have filled in most but don't know what civil status means. Can you enlighten me? What does PPS number mean? I have put volume and page number there as there is nowhere else for it to go. Is place of death the same as Registration District? Do I email this form as an attachment? Who do I send it to?  Sorry I have so many questions.

No problem with questions. The form is not user-friendly. You can't do it online for an event prior to 1922. You have to use snail mail but can ask them to e-mail back to you. I live in the States and I usually get it back in 2 weeks.

Civil status is confusing to me also. I usually put "citizen" although I don't think that is correct. Not sure what PPS means but I usually show the registration district and the volume and page number.

Place of death show Killyleg Co. Cavan.

When you print the form there should be a second page with mailing instructions. This GRO office is located in Roscommon town.

  • Thanks, again, Roger, for being so helpful. Can you tell me how I could access David McCracken's death details, which you thought might be between 1861 and 1863?  Would there be any church records available? Margaret and David were married in the 2nd Presbyterian Church, Drum in the parish of Currin, Co Mpnaghan. I have also just found out that Robert McCracken had 3 sisters, Charlotte McCracken, Elizabeth McCracken, Margaret McCracken.  Is there any way of finding information about them? I don't know who they married or if they stayed in Ireland.

I didn't realize that the family was Presbyterian. A good number of the non-Catholic birth, marriage and death records were recorded from 1845-1863 prior to total registration starting in 1864. However, I looked for a death record for David in Cootehill, CXlones and Monaghan registration districts with no success.

Generally, churches did not maintain death information although you are more likely to find information from non-RC churches. Maybe you should write to the churches in the areea.

Regarding Robert's sisters, their births would have been way back to the 1820s and I don't think records exist. See the display from Roots Ireland below on the records they maintain. The first column is baptisms, the second marriages.

By the way back to the Griffiths, there is also a Margaret McCrackin listed in Killyleg. Possibly Robert's sister?
