I would love to find out more about our Hennessy/Ryan/Russell ancestors from Drom, and would appreciate any help anyone could give us. We have many some family stories passed on but would love to go back further and to find out about the lost daughter.  This is what we know after many years of research.

My great-great-great grandparents, Martin Hennessy was born about 1800  (we dont know his parents names or have  his baptismal record but believe he was born  in Drom)  and Anastacia Honora Ryan (daughter of William Ryan and Nelly Russell  and baptised in Drom on Dec 11, 1811 or 1812)  were married in Drom on February 21, 1827. They immigrated to the US in mid 1850s with all the children listed below, except that the one daughter whose name we dont know was a "cripple" according to family stories and was denied entrance to the US. She was apparently about twelve at  the time and  got sent back to Ireland to live with an aunt who would have been in Drom. They never heard any more of her or knew if she even made it back to Ireland.

They had the following children that we know of:

Richard born 1833  (I dont have an exact date or baptism)

Anastacia Johanna born Marcy 21, 1837

Mary born 13 October 1839

Dennis born May 5, 1841

Anne born January 1844

Martin no dates

"Lulu" no dates and not even sure of her real name

Another daughter who was a "cripple" , name unknown

Thank you for any help you can give us. We are so excited about this site and hoping so much we can find out more.

You may have already visited Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie  The Drom RC records on Roots go back to about 1808. I searched for Hennessy baptismal records father Martin and mother's surname Ryan. 8 records came up. When I added Anastasia as the mother's name only 4 records came up. I did verify that there is a record for a Richard, Anastasia, Mary, Denis(2) and Anne. No Martin record and no Lulu.

Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record. I went as far as I could go without incurring a cost. It is possible that there were two different couples-- Martin Hennessy and a Ryan wife.

I could not find a Martin Hennessy in Drom parish in the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing.

One other lead. I found a William Ryan in the 1825 Tithe listing for Drom parish. He was living in Drom townland.

  • Thank you so much, Roger. I did look at the records for two and found a bit more. Anastasia was sometimes called Ann for short and sometimes Nora for her middle name, which makes it even harder to search all. The parents and dates match for baptism of Richard Hennessy in Carraduff, how far would that have been from Drum?

Are there any cemetery records for that area? We looked years ago in Drom and didnt see any stones, but realize even they were often to poor to pay for them, or if they were many have fallen and are hard to read.  Still, I'd appreciate any ideas of where to look more.

Likely the townland is Curraduff in Templemore civil parish which is the parish to the north of Drom. There is no carraduff townland in Tipperary.

See this link to Dr. Jane Lyons' site. She has transcribed headstones in Drom RC parish cemetery including Hennessys. I notice a Richard in 1883.
