Clarke Family of Bailieborough--

Hi Cathy,  I would love to help you, but  I would need a little more information, do you know did they come from the town or the surrounding area& if you know the townland that would be great & what timeline have you got for Bernard and Matthew & even the names of his siblings would be a help.  Do you know if they had a nickname, Clarkes are a plenty and that is used to identify the different families.  Can you identify them on the Census for 1901/1911, it is at nationalarchives.ie and is a free service.

Thank you--I know that my great grandfather Bernard Clarke was born May 4, 1861 and he died October 29, 1932.  He married Catherine Murray who was born June 22, 1872 and died in 1924.  I will check census records here--thank you--They emigrated and had four children--James F. born in 1891, William H, born in 1893, Helen G born in 1894 and Bernard C born in 1896.  All his children were born in New York City I believe.  Bernard Sr. died in Ireland when he returned to visit an ailing brother (Frank, Matthew, John or Peter) --He became ill while there and did not return to the US--but is buried in Ireland.  Not sure if he returned to Bailieborough or not--I think I can get more--but not for several hours--thank you--I am leaving for my trip this Friday and will be in Dublin on Saturday.  Bernard's son James is my grandfather.

Using your suggested site I found Mathew is from Rakeevan--His daughter Mary lived on Main Street in the 1911 Census.  John was on Virginia Street.  His barony? was Clarkee?  My great grandfather also reports he was single in the census--hmm (perhaps not him)  ...children were Frank, Mary, Matthew, Ellen, Rose, Bridgett, John, Anna, Peter, Bernard and James.

I looked at Matthew in the 1901 Census & again he states he is not married and he states he was born in Co. Cavan, while in 1911 he is born in Co Meath.  If you are going to Dublin, on Monday you will be able to go to the Registry of Birth Deaths and Marriages it is The General Register Office (Oifig An Ard-Chl?raitheora) maintains a family research facility at Werburgh Street, Dublin 2.  There you will be able to search for his death & that of his brother & obtain the the certificates immediately, this will also tell you who the informant was & if a relative that will give you further clues as to who is with the the family.  If Bernard was born in 1861, you should be able to search also for his fathers death cert as Registration started in 1864.  Did they marry in Ireland, get those certs also, you may be limited in numbers by what you can get, but ask them for the best value, regarding searching for the day etc & go early so you are not caught up by them being busy etc & having to get them posted out etc, get them to show you how to search.   Bring all your information with you, so you can cross check the info, unless you have it on your laptop etc.  Have you looked at the Ellis island site for details of the time they emigrated & you should find Bernard's details when he returns to his brother, you may get other family listed with them or the name of the person at home, but those details may not have come until later on.

Mary Clarke in 1911 Census is a widow, her maiden name unknown, but she could have been Clarke married to Clarke, I looked at her in 1901 & she is a widow then also with her son & daughter. Tick on the show all information on the Census, it gives you a little more info..

I have a book my cousin wrote which may have some further details, particularly what year Bernard returned to Ireland.  Perhaps more specifics on the two who went to California--

I was able to find out that Bernard returned to Bailieborough to care for his brother John in 1932.  At that time John lived with his daughter.  Bernard died October 21, 1932 and is buried in Bailieborough altho trips in the 60's by my father's first cousin could not find a gravestone--

I also learned that the Clarke farm was sold to Mrs. McMahon--not sure when but she was alive in 1968 and wrote to Bernard Jr. for about 10 years.  He describes the two story brick house on the center of the property with a decrepit (by the 60's) white stone wall by a thatched roof cottage. 

He went to care for John at the request of his sister Rose who lived in SanFrancisco CA.

The Valuations office hopefully will be able to help with that, but we are still not too sure of the townland, is that correct?

I looked up a John Clarke in 1911 & found a 69 yr old with his son Bernard, that would mean he is 90 in 1932, however in 1901 he is 50, which is more credible if he dies after his brother Bernard.

The townland is Ballynamona,  I dont know if there are any McMahons living there but there are some in Coppenagh, which is the townland next to it.  I feel that you should communicate with me via my own email address ocallaghan.carmel@gmail.com as I dont want to discuss living people.

Cathy and Gillian  - I think all of us who are registered with the "Parish" Bailieborough see these messages on the Bailieborough thread whether we are Clarkes or not.  I'm looking for Brady/Heery information from Bailieborough and yet see the Clarke posts and others.  (and...there are a lot of Clarkes in Cavan!).  Tom Kearney

To add to the Clarke family research in Cavan and, with some probability, Bailieborough

Patrick Clarke (Parents Owen Clarke and Catherine Murtough) Born C1837 Cavan died Melbourne 1911
Married Ann Callan (Parents James Callan and unknown) Born C1839 Cavan died Melbourne 1926

My Great grandparents had their places of birth registered in Victoria as Cavan. They sailed out of Liverpool Mar 6 and arrived Melbourne in Jun 1857 as married and aged 20 and 18. Their first child was born Nov 9 and baptised Nov 16 1857

Roughly, this is the total I know of the Irish family.

I too have Callan's in my family & Clarkes (toooo many of them).

Do you have any unusal stories about the Callan's?

There are not many of them and the live mainly around Kingscourt that is the parish of Enniskeen & Murtaghs is another name connected to that parish, so if you are looking up parish registers, concentrate there and Bailieborough of course.  I have seen Callans in the Bailieborough area, but cant connect them to mine.
