Thanks for your help in the past just to update, am still struggling to find anything re Ellen Leadey wife of John Fitzsimmons - I understand from Col and also from the site of surnames that Leadey is not a recognised name - just a slight stumbling block!!! I have a birth certificate for my ancestor James born in England with his mothers name listed as Fitzsimmons formerly Leadey.

I have since sent for a certificate for another of their children in the hope a different spelling could occur - watch this space.

Sorry if I am not supposed to use this facility in this way, let me know and I will be more specific and not so chatty in future!!!

Do let us know if you learn anything new from that birth cert - the Leadey spelling is a difficult one to fathom - could be Leaddy, though there are no Leaddy households listed in the Griffith's Valuation.

Hi again

Still struggling to find anything about my GGF John Fitzsimons and his wife Ellen prior to them living in Leeds, England in 1839. Since last contact have found 1821 census in Ballymachugh, Cavan showing an Ellin Leddy aged 6 years living with her widowed mother and 6 siblings. Another 1821 census is showing an Ellin Leadey 8 years old with her grandfather Terry Masterson, his wife Ann and four other people in Kilmore, Cavan. The latter spelling of the surname is the same as in the census' in England.

1821 census in Carga Bruise, Lurgan, Cavan shows a John Fitzsimons aged 10 living with his father, 3 siblings and a house servant. Fron the English census' my John Fitzsimons was always a labourer and so this does not seem to fit with the professions of his siblings.

I am also interested to find out where my ancestors landed in England and where they left Ireland, can anyone throw any light on where I can find that information.

The 1821 census is incomplete. Only a few parishes in Cavan have survived, so you are not able to see all the possible families in the county in 1821.

There are no records of travel between Ireland and England so you won’t find your family in any passenger lists. Nearest port of departure to Cavan is probably Dundalk which in the 1830s had some sailings to England. (The service between Dundalk and Liverpool started in 1580 and lasted in one form or another till 1968). Fleetwood or Barrow may also have been served at various times. But your family could also have left from Newry/Warrenpoint, Belfast or Dublin. If you look at local newspapers in those places (on Ancestry and fmp), the shipping companies advertised their departures and it’s clear that there was plenty of choice between Ireland and Britain. Cargo was the main business and passengers were top up revenue, often travelling in fairly uncomfortable conditions. However there was lots of competition and the fares were low.

Thanks for your response albeit confirming what I thought could be the case with regard to both census and travel imformation.

Seems I have hit a complete stumbling block with this search although I have been trying for quite a number of years. I wonder if I came over to Ireland to Cavan would that serve any purpose, my husband thinks not, I really do not have anything more to go on other than what is written in the English census', in each case it is stated that John, Ellen and Henry Fitzsimmons were all born in Cavan, subsequent children were all born, lived and died in the Leeds area of England. The family name was changed from Fitzsimmons to Simmons in approximately early 1850's although they did regularly revert back to Fitzsimons on their death registrations.

No I doubt you would find much more by a personal visit. But you should come anyway just to enjoy the area your ancestors lived in.
