James Joseph Manogue "parish of the Butt's"

Roots Ireland has an 1826 baptismal record for a James Manogue in the Templeorum RC church records. The civil parishes covered by Templeorum are in the southwest corner of Co. Kilkenny.

Roots also has 7 Catherine Costello baptismal records for the period 1826-1830. I did not look for the parishes.

Roots did not have an 1831 baptismal record for a Patrick Manogue. There was an 1832 record but not in Templeorum.

The Butt's Parish in KIlkenny city mentioned at this link

There's a location named '"Butts Gardens" listed in St. Canice's civil parish, Kilkenny city on the Tithe records dated from March 1828 for this area that might be where that name derived. see : here 

Also mentioned in the same civil parish, and possibly connected, are a 'Butter Milk Lane Gardens', and Gardens..

The 1st Edition OSI map (c1838), shows another clue .. St. Canice's RC Chapel appears to be captioned 'Butt's Chapel' and adjacent  and slightly north west is Butt's green - see here

St. Canice's civil parish covers some western parts of the city and also an area to the the north west in Co. Kilkenny. The Catholic parish which covered most of this was also named St. Canice.

Based on the info that Shane found, it is unlikely that the 1826 baptismal record in Templeorum would be for your ancestor.

I would think that Manogue is likely a spelling variation of Minogue. There's an entry under this version of the name on the Tithe records in St. Canice's civil parish that might be worth checking - see here Wm. Minogue, Lyon's Fields   (The record is duplicated in error, the Robert's hill entry is on the other page )

The townland of Lyons is less than 500m to the south of St. Canice's/Butts RC church

Mike, just saw your message. I was born 200 yards away from Butts Green in Kilkenny and went to primary school there in the St. Canices boys national school. It is adjacent to St Canice's Church which I attended in my younger days until I left Kilkenny at 16. There was a Catholic parish of St. Canices in existence until very recently but this I believe has now merged into the bigger St. Marys parish. I remember a Minogues furniture shop which was located about 100 yards from the church, and as far as I am aware, it is still in existence. This is likely linked to your Manogue line. Sorry for the delay in responding to you! My Uncle went to Kilkenny in the '60's and found a Thomas Manogue through the phonebook. This man mentioned a generation that had seven sons, something my grandfather also used to mention. Thomas had an old family bible but for whatever reason he seemed to be reluctant to let my Uncle copy it. He is now surely dead but I know he had children and I wonder if they or their grandchildren still has that bible. I may have to come look for myself. Thanks for your reply.
