Hi everyone

I'm looking to try and find my Irish relatives.  I'm the only living daughter of my father Robert Alexander Griffin.  I don't have much info on my fathers family, as he died when I was 14 years of age.  The information I do have is as follows:

Robert Alexander Griffin - His brother (one of 5 I think) was Eamond Griffin.  I think there were 5 brothers and two sisters in the family.  My father lived with his brother Eamond in Richmond upon Thames until his death.  His brother Eamond died not long after my father.  I father worked as a vacume salesman - a bar tender in several places two of which were The Richmond Hotel and the Kew Gardens pub, he may also have worked in Surbiton.

He married my mother Joyce Mary Attwood in Kingston Upon Thames I think maybe in 1956 and I think they were in Birmingham for a time.

I know Dublin is a large place but I think that is where his origins are.  My parents divorced around about 1962.  That's about all I really know.  I do have a couple of photos of him.  If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be most grateful to you.

God Bless

  • I think the marriage of Robert and Joyce would be a good place to start - and there's a likely match showing on the BMD Index on Ancestry as follows :

    Name: Robert A Griffin
    Spouse Surname: Attwood
    Date of Registration: Jan-Mar 1956
    Registration district: Surrey Northern
    Volume : 5g / Page :780

the matching bride is a Joyce M Attwood. You can use those details to order a cert from GRO UK. These cost about 9 pounds STG, and would show places of residence for the bride and groom, occupations, father's details etc .. all vital clues to working back further.. the official website for ordering certs for England/Wales is here

I think the following is likely the correct index references for Robert's death - it's the same area as the marriage and sounds the the correct timeframe..

    Name: Robert Alexander Griffin
    Birth Date:16 Apr 1928
    Date of Registration: Mar 1973
    Age at Death: 44
Registration district: Richmond upon Thames (county:Greater London)
    Volume:5d Page: 2022

The age and date of birth could be very helpful in tracing back, but bear in mind these are not always accurate..

  • Hi Sandra
Not sure if this is your man as you didn't mention a birth year but the only birth / baptism record of Robert Alexander Griffin in the 1900's is 29 April 1928 in Trinity Without R C parish WATERFORD
Parents are Martin Griffin and Mary Bolster; address 1 Lower Yellow Road
Other children of this marriage are Martin Christopher 1922 & Catherine Teresa 1924.
No sign of Eamond I'm afraid.

  • there's a potential birth match for your to Robert on the BMD Index - the middle initial fits, and the year quarter is correct.. so definitely worth noting. Birth is in Ireland and Registration district is Waterford which covers the city and parts of county Waterford, also a few sections of south county KIlkenny. Mother's maiden name is Bolster..

    Name Robert A Griffin
    Event Type : Birth
Registration Quarter and Year : Apr - Jun 1928
    Registration District Waterford
    Mother's Maiden Name: Bolster
    Volume 4 / Page 545

This fit's the details we have so far very well, but I dont want to send you down a false trail, so think it's best to start with that English marriage cert and work from there. This possible birth though is defintely worth noting, and once you have the marriage cert you can compare the details to see if we have a definite link..

The BMD Index shows a number of possible siblings to this Robert, no sign of Eamon - see here. Maybe the names will be familiar ? These may not all be the same family, but are not since the surnames are not common it seems possible these relate to one family ..
