  • I sense that you may have either the church copy of the marriage certificate, or an extract from one of the pay to view sites. It may be worth your while getting a full copy of the civil certificate, as that should contain additional information. The marriage was registered in Dundalk Jul ? Sept 1892 Volume 2, page 648.

You can order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for ?4.  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can?t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

The civil certificate should contain the couples respective townlands (addresses). It should also record the groom?s occupation. So that way you?ll find out whether or not he was a sailor. You?ll also get the respective father?s occupations which may be helpful in researching further.

Regarding the absence or presence of the O? prefix, it was generally regarded as detachable and was often omitted in records. It all depends on the whim of the official recording the information.

Is this the family in 1901? If so, it seems to confirm that Peter was indeed a sailor, and that he was born in Co Louth c 1868. There?s just 2 births of anyone named Peter Mulholland in Co Louth in the period 1864 ? 1872. Both were in 1864. One was Vol 17, page 822. The other Vol 12, page 792. You might want to order copies of those to see if either had a father Thomas.
