I have information indicating that my great grandfather, Patrick William O'Hara (b 1832) and great grandmother, Jane Lydia Marshall (b Jun 1842) were married in Ahoghill Parish on 26 Jan 1860.  I would like to locate the parents, siblings of both of my great grandparents.  Any help greatly appreciated.  I do know they had 2 sons, John William O'Hara (b31 Oct 1860) and David Rainey O'Hara (b07 NOv 1862) before they left Ireland for the United States.

  • It?ll be tricky tracing these families for certain. RC marriages weren?t entered into the statutory registers till 1864. Prior to that all you have to rely on are the RC church records which tend to have very limited information ie the couples names, the date and their 2 witnesses. So no parents names, addresses etc.

There are a couple of gravestones in Aughnahoy RC graveyard, Portglenone, that might relate to your family. Each gravestone is listed under O?Hara and Rainey, both of which are names in your family. Aughnahoy is just a few miles from Ahoghill.

J.H.S. Erected In memory of William Rainey Of Rosegift who died 25th Of January 1861 aged 80 years also of his wife Bridget Rainey who died 23rd January 1827 aged 35 years

I.H.S Erected by Margaret Hampshire In memory of her father Henry Rainey of Rosegift Who died 1st January 1873 Aged 78 years Also her mother Cthrine Rainey Who died 1st February 1878 Aged 80 years Lizzie G. O'Hara Died 10th August 1900 aged 22 years John O'Hara Died 10th September 1915 Mrs. Cecilia O'Hara Died 18th November 1913 Requiescant In Pace

If there?s a connection, the ages might make John O?Hara and Patrick William O?Hara brothers.

  • I?d say that the townland on Patrick?s marriage certificate has been mistranscribed and the correct version is Carmacmoin. That?s on the southern edge of Ahoghill. Modern Church St runs along the northern edge of it.

I looked in Griffiths for 1862 to see if there were any O?Haras listed but there are not. However given that the family appear to have been agricultural labourers and weavers, that?s not too surprising. Not all ag labs cabins were listed. (There was a Houston family listed and I note that one of the witnesses was a Sarah Huston).

    Here?s the occupants in 1901:
