Hi, I know from my 2xgreat-grandfather's tombstone in Melbourne, Australia, that he came from Fermanagh. Although the town listed on the inscription is 'Auchandizapt' which I cannot find anywhere but may well be a spelling mistake. His name was Patrick Drum and he was baptised on 19 March 1836 in Aughindigard, Knockninny, Fermanagh. His father was James Drum and his mother Mary. I am seeking information on James and Mary. I would like to find out their birth/death dates and locations and possibly their parent's names. Also if a Matthew Drum, from Aughindigard, is Patrick's brother. Patrick came out to Australia in 1859 and married Brigdet Higgins from Roscommon in 1865.
I have searched rootsireland database but cannot find any trace of James Drum birth that could match or the marriage of James to Mary to find out her surname. Is it possible they came over from England? How could you find out?
Any information or tips on how to progress my search would be most appreciated.
thanks and regards
Laureen,

Laureen:
Roots does not have all the RC parishes for Co. Fermanagh. Knockninny townland is in Kinawley civil parish. The corresponding RC parishes are Kinawley (1835 records start) and Knockninny (1855 records start).
I could not find a townland called Aughindigard. The closest was Aghindaiagh and maybe that is the correct spelling.
The 1862 Griffiths Valuation listing for Kinawley civil parish has over 20 Drum entries. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/fermanagh/kinawley.htm
Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to put the RC parish registers online for free searching. I would look at Kinawley and Knockninny at that time for yoru Drums.
Let me know if you have any questions.

another possibility for the townland to consider might be Aghakillymaud, it's located a few miles to the north of the RC chapel for the parish of Knockninny, which was at Derrylin.
Knockninny parish is listed on RootsIreland under Co. Cavan, as it covers parts of the two counties.

Laureen,
Unfortunately, the baptism & marriage records for the RC parish of Knockninny don?t start until 1855 which may account for your failure to locate a record of the Drum family so far.
You ask if the family are likely to have moved to the area from England. If they were RC, I?d say that?s unlikely. More likely to be of native Irish origins.
Have a look at the Fermanagh Gold site. They have a lot of Drum(m) entries, many of them in the Kinawley/Knockninny area. I can see plenty of Drum gravestones for example in St. Nailes RC graveyard.

Thanks Roger. This helps. I think that Aghindaigh is the place I'm looking for. I'll keep an eye out for the free indexes from the National Library. cheers Laureen

Thanks for the tip on Cavan and for pinpointing that Knockninny is close to Derrylin which rings a bell. cheers Laureen

Hi Laureen, Just seen your post and I think the townland you are looking for is Aghindisert, Aughindizart, there are many ways of spelling it. You can find it in all the census 1901, 1911 & 1864. I have some information on the Drum Family, they are connected to my Maguire and Curry Families. Aghindisert is a townland near Co. Cavan border. Let me know if you need help and I can give you what I have! My email is jjhamill@bigpond.com and I am from South Australia, Cheers Josie
