Hello to all the good people on this site...it's a great resource!
I am searching for information about my Maternal Grand Mother, but I am unsure how information is broken down in the parishes in Ireland? She was born in 1873 in Portumna No.1, Galway. Is Portumna the parish? or the sub-division? suburb?
Where might I begin my search, if you would advise me?

Portumna is a town in Lickmolassy civil parish. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portumna
The Portumna RC baptismal records are not online but the marriage records are online on Roots Ireland.
If you provide me with your grandmother's name, I will look for her civil birth record which would be registered in the Portumna registration district.

Thank you Roger! My grandmother was Mary Ann McDonald/McDonnell b. 17 April 1873, Portumna No.1, Galway, Ireland. I have two different spellings, whether one is the Americanized or not, I am unsure. Parents: Patrick McDonnell/McDonald and Mary Broderick. (She had brothers Patrick, Thomas, and John.)

Hi Roger! (Again)
Mary Ann was not married in Ireland, she came to the states as a young girl and she was married here. I have her marriage bans.

Below is the 1873 civil birth index record and the surname was McDonnell. I confirmed on Roots Ireland that the parents were Patrick McDonnell and Mary Broderick. If you want to get a copy of the record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros let me know and I will send instructions. The record will show the date of birth, parents names and where they were living.

Hi
There is a Thomas McDonnell in the 1901 census of Ireland living in New Street Portumna aged 30, your grandmother would have been 28 in that year he is described as a corn merchant also two younger sisters living there plus some employees its pure speculation that there is a link but will send it to you anyway.
Portumna was and still is a busy market town on the river Shannon at the northern tip of Lough Derg

Thank you Roger and Thomas for your help.
Thomas, this is not my Grandmother, as she was already in the USA at this point in 1902.
Roger, yes I would like the instructions, please?

Go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx print out the birth form, fill it out to the best of your ability, add the info from the index record: year of birth, registration district and volume and page number. Make sure you ask for a copy. You have to mail the request to GRO in Co. Roscommon (address is provided with the form) but you can have GRO e-mail the copy back. I provide a credit card number with the request and never had a problem.

Thank you so much..this means the world to me, as we have spent much time trying to unlock this part of the family tree. How would I go about now finding out further information on Patrick McDonnell & Mary Broderick?

Nanci:
More than likely this is the civil marriage index record for Mary Broderick and Patrick McDonnell. You can follow the instructions above to get a copy of the marriage record from the GRO. The marriage record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1871.
By the way, later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers online for free searching.
