Hi there,

My son, Will Houlihan, will be studying in Cork this summer. I am trying to do some family history beforehand.

I am looking for Jeremiah Houlihan born in Inchigeelagh Parish in April 21, 1821. He married Mary Swiney. He had a son,Timothy Houlihan, born February 13, 1842 in Inchigeelagh Parish. He married Margaret O'Connor.

Timothy emgirated to the US in an unknown year.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Thank you so much.

Best Wishes,

  • Greetings,

I have seen all 3 of those surnames as possibly connected to my Mahoney & Regan lines [1880's emigrants to northern Illiniois]..Can you tell us which Locations, possibly Townland names, within Inchigeelagh parish, were included in either of your Houlihan marriage records, or on Timothy's baptismal record?  If you could post those, as well as any witnesses' names, dates, and also US locations, I think I can help with further info. If you do not have that info yet, I can look for it in the Casey Collection, Volumes 7 & ll. Let's compare notes

    Thanks,

In the 1840s the family lived in the townland of Lyrenageeha in the civil parish of Inchageelagh. I found Timothy's baptismal record on www.irishgenealogy.ie which is a free Irish government site.

There are baptismal records for at least three siblings on the site. NOTE: The name of the RC parish is Iveleary.

  • Hi Roger and Barb,
This information is so exciting. I have only just begun and don't have any marriage or baptismal records yet.
I do know that Jeremiah's son, Timothy, born Feb 13, 1842 emigrated to the US and did settle in Northern Illinois and died in Litchfield, Illinois. That's where my husband's family (the Houlihans) are from.
I appreciate all the information. I am not sure where to begin to find records. I am new at this.

The three siblings to Timothy where I located baptismal records in Iveleary were:

    John     May 17th 1840

    Daniel   May 14th 1843

    Margaret    December 8th 1844

The parents were Jerh Houlihan and Mary Swiney.

  • Thank you, Roger.

How do I go about finding more information on Timothy's father, Jeremiah Houlihan? I can't find any records on him.

I'd also like to read Census records that might show where they lived. I would love to try to locate the address when we go to Ireland.

And--do you know how I would find records that show when and how Timothy Houlihan emigrated to the United States? He died in Litchfield, Illinois in 1912. Born in Cork in 1842.

What do websites do you find most helpful. I am having a difficult time.

    I sure appreciate your help!!

  • Laural:

As I mentioned above the Houlihans lived in Lyrenageeha townland in Inchigeelagh civil parish which is near the Co. Kerry border. Lyrenageeha was 484 acres in size. If you have the Google Map application enter Lyrenageeha and you will get an idea where it is located.

I'm not sure you will find a baptismal record for Jeremiah Houlihan or Mary Swiney. There were no baptismal records in iveleary for either name and I did not locate the marriage record. Also, without knowing their parents names how would you conclusively know you had the correct record.

Since they did live near the Kerry border, I will look for a marriage record in Kerry.

The earliest full census available for Ireland is the 1901. There are a few fragments from earliers censuses but none for Inchigeelagh parish. I checked the 1901 census for Lyrena geeha and there were no Houlihan families.

You won't find any Irish records on emigration from the country. Your best bet is to use Ancestry or Familysearch to see if you can find him coming into the USA.

You asked about web sites. www.irishgenealogy.ie is a good site for part of Co. Cork as well as Co. Kerry. The Mormon site www.familysearch.org is a good free site. Ancestry is a subscription site but very useful and there are other subscription sites in Ireland which can be helpful.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you again so much for the very helful information.

I did go to Google maps to look at where Lyrenageeha is located. It was really fun to think our ancestors had lived there.

I haven't yet had the chance to look at records in Kerry, but thank you for the clue to follow.

I did look in Co. Kerry and did not see the marriage record but I could have missed it.
