I am trying to find more information on my grandfather Hubert McLean (Hubert Thompson McLean) born c 1863 believed to originate from  Roscommon - possibly Ardcarn. Hubert later settled in Liverpool in the UK  where he married his second wife. His marriage certificate indicates he was a widower at this time. I am researching details from Huberts first marriage & family believed to be from the Ardcarn or Ballyarden area. Huberts father was called Hugh and was a farmer. (This information appears on his naval documents & Griffiths evaluation confirms there was a Hugh McLean Farmer from this area) I have a very interesting letter which confirms Hubert had at least one son from his first marriage. Can any one help with any additional information?

I located a baptismal record for likely a sister of Hubert who was born in 1860 but baptized in 1861. The family was living in Ballyardan/Ballyarden townland in Ardcarn civil parish. See record below. The mother was Anne no surname. I searched for a marriage record for Hugh McLean all the way back to 1845 so likely they were married in another church.

I did not find a baptismal record for Hubert. I did locate an 1886 marriage record for Hubert to Edith Anne Moore in the Ardcarne C of I church. See below.

  • Many thanks Roger for your prompt reply it is much appreciated.

I found details of a marriage record for Hugh McLean (Huberts possible father) to an Ann Thompson 5th July 1847 (Ann Thompson born 1827). Their respective parents listed as Robert McClean & John Thompson. Licence Parish Church of England & Ireland by licence witnessed by Samuel McClean & joseph Quaile. Registrar district of Boyle & solemised at Ardcarne in the church of Ardcarne. If Hugh McClean & Ann Thompson are Hubert McLeans parents, is it possible the "Thompson"  name from Ann was carried on to their off spring? would this be common in those days as many of my current relatives have the surname Thompson-McLean.

It looks like I need to concentrate on Huberts possible first wife`s name now. This may help as I am pursuing a military route for one of their possible offspring. Thankyou once again

  • Gail:

Very possible that the maiden name of Ann was carried to the next generation and beyond. Also, the fact that the marriage was in the same church makes it likely that you have the correct marriage record.

  • Thankyou Roger.

I am hoping to visit Ardcarne in the future to maybe follow up on some further  research as my husband believes he has connections with "Roscommon" Thanks for your support to date

  • Dear Gail

I realize this conversation is a year and a half old, but did you by any chance find out more about Hugh McLean the father? I am trying to research him. I noted there was a son Hugh born in 1863 and wondered if that was your Hubert.
