Hello,

My name is Lynne Kievan.  My mother always told me I was named for an Irish saint.  I learned on a visit to Ireland last year that there were two saints that probably inspired the selection of my middle name: St. Kevin and St. Kieran.  Subsequent family history research revealed I also had a great uncle Kieran that my mother never met who might also have provided inspiration.  Whatever help you might provide in my search for family origins would be greatly appreciated.

I am seeking information on my great grandmother, Mary Cummins and her husband James Power. I would like to learn the names of their parents and perhaps find their baptismal records. She was born about 1859, married James Power (born about 1844; died approx 1900). She resided in County Offaly (King's) at the time of the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census. The family were Catholic. On the 1901 Census, she was listed as a widow residing on Park Street in Shannon Harbour, with the following children:

Patrick Joseph born 1887; Michael Thomas born 1889; Margaret born 1892; William Martin born 1893; James born 1897;

Kieran born 1900.

On the 1911 Irish Census, she lived at Curraghavarna & Portavrolla; District: Banagher; County: King's.  Children remaining at home were Michael, William, James and Kieran; daughter margaret, though younger, had preceded my grandfather Patrick in emigrating to the United States.

Sometime before 1920, Mary Cummins and her sons Michael and Kieran moved to London.

Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Lynne

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

I searched for the marriage record on Roots and Find My Past with no success. As far as you know, the couple were married in Co. Offaly?

I did look for a baptismal record for Mary and located a record (below) for a Mary Cummins in 1859 in the Banagher RC church. I also located the likely civil death index record for James which is also below.

If the oldest child was born in 1880 or later possibly you can find the marriage record on the RC register for the parish which were placed online 10 days ago. The records end in October 1880. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0149

Let me know if you have questions

  • Hello,

I will be visiting Ireland in September and would like some guidance in searching for the burial sites for my great grandparents referenced in the messages above: Mary Cummins Power, died in 1912 in Banagher; James Power, died in 1900 while working on the Balliver Estate.  She was buried in Banagher, to the best of my knowledge; he may have been buried on the Estate.  I have looked at Find-a-grave and have had no success.  Some of the reading I have done indicates common gravemarkers were made of sandstone during that time and may have lost any engraving through erosion.  Do you have any suggestions as to how to begin my search when I come to Banagher?

Many thanks for your prior response and any help you can offer with this query,

    Lynne

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

Good to hear that you are coming to Ireland. I will e-mail one of our parish liaisons in a nearby parish to see what suggestions she would have regarding your search.

  • Dear Lynne:

That is wonderful news that you will be able to return to Ireland to do more research.  You might be interested in the Historic Graves project which has trained communities to record, photograph and transcribe their local graveyards.  The website is:  wwwhistoricgraves.com and the site is free.  You can search by county, parish as well as by family surname.

If you need any further assistance, please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

I have checked the Baptismal records we have here in Banagher, but can find no record of any Powers having been baptised here in Banagher.  Maybe they were baptised in High Street Church as they lived in Shannon Harbour.  I don't know the email but the address to write to would be The Parish Secretary, Ferbane, Co. Offaly.
