LOOKING FOR LEARY & REDMOND NATIVES OF DONAGHMORE

I'm no expert on early Irish life I'm afraid but I thought you might be inetested to know that there are 23 Redmonds in Donaghmore Wexford in the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 (a free site). This will show you where they were living then ; (there are lots of others in Wexford also

There are 206 Lerys in Wexford in the Tithes also but none in Donaghmore

www.rootsireland.ie/ (pay per view) has 4 Ellen Redmonds born Wexford 1810 + - 5 years

1811 and 1813 from Kilkanerin RC parish and 1812 & 1814 from Enniscorthy RC parish

I'm no expert but suspect the Enniscorthy records could be the Donaghmore connection

I couldn't find a marriage record for them or a birth/baptims for Bernard or birth records for any children

Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 (free) has 6 Learys and 60 Redmonds in Donaghmore Wexford

Donaghmore civil parish is located on the east coast of Co. Wexford, to the south of Gorey. The Catholic parish for the area was Ballygarrett. Baptism and marriage records for this parish go back to 1828 and are available on microfilm in the National Library. This parish does not seem to be included on RootsIreland transcripts at the moment.

Times for Catholic farmers were uncertain to put it mildly.  They were tennents at will ( meaning the landlord could evict a tennent if they were late paying their rent, or not paying their tithes to the protestant church) Marshal law via the army was brutal to non or late payers.

They were offically uneducated,under the penal law system, not allowed to own anything, changes were introduced in 1829 to change this , however it took many further years for the system to change, most likely due to the famine in the early 1840's. Over half the entire population starved.

Many travelled as far as Liverpool to work and save for their passage to Australia or the US.  Check the 1841 Liverpool census for a lead on your family. 

I have checked to see is either Ellen was a Redmond married to a Cullin or Roche, and found nothing, sorry,

Not that this will help much in your search, however I am John Leary's great, great, great grandson. He was born around 1835. He was married to Catherine Brennan. He died from what I have learned to be black lung and also sustained ailments from the civil war. He died in schuylkill county Pennsylvania.
