My family appears in the parish records for Cloughjordan, as well as areas nearby in the parishes of Dunkerrin, Borrisokane and Toomevara.

My family tree consists of 4 O'Meara children, supposedly born to parents John O'Meara & Bridget Harty.  Those 4 children are as follows:

1.  Timothy "Tady" O'Meara b. 1797 and married his 2nd or 3rd cousin Mary O'Meara b. 1801 in Moneygall.  She was reportedly the daughter of a James O'Meara.  She had sisters Jane O'Meara b. 1791 who married Thomas Martin circa 1812 and immigrated to Quebec, Canada circa 1820 and Elizabeth O'Meara was b. 1800 and married William Birmingham (b. 1792) circa 1821.  Elizabeth and William lived in Busherstown in Dunkerrin parish until about 1842 when they too immigrated to Quebec, Canada.

Timothy and his wife had their earlier children baptized in the Dunkerrin parish records, but documents show in later years they were living in the Ballyhasty area and Mill area and had 4 children baptized in those 2 locations.

I haven't yet found an entry for Timothy in the Tithe Applotment books.  But, the Poor Law Rate books lists a Timothy O'Meara in 1843 and 1846 living in Mullinreigh/Mullinaigh which may have supposed to of been Mullinkeagh?

Timothy and his wife Mary remained in Ireland until about 1852 (May be as late as 1858) when they immigrated to London, Ontario, Canada bringing with them their 7 surviving children.

2. Mary O'Meara b. 1790 in Tipperary was married to Robert Collisson (Collison) circa 1809.  In the very early years after their marriage, Robert appears in the parish records for Templetuohy and Moyne living in Long Orchard.  Robert appears in the Tithe Applotment Books (no year given) living in Long Orchard.  However, by the 1820's he may have been living in Boherna and Cooraclevin in the parish of Dunkerrin as this is where his children were born according to their baptismal records.  The Poor Law Union Rate Books states that Robert Collison was living in Ballyhasty in 1843 and 1846.  Soon afterwards, he immigrates to the London, Ontario area in Canada with his 7 surviving children.  Two of those 7 children consisted of 2 daughters that married in Ireland.  First, Bridget Collison b. 1810 marries Richard Quinn b. 1803.  They married in 1839 with an address of Ballyhasty in Cloughjordan parish and proceed to have their 5 children baptized there - with the location for almost all fluctuating between Coolnamona and Coolnamunna.  The other daughter married in 1846 in Cloughjordan parish was that of Mary Collison b. 1819 who married William McCarthy b. 1811.  It has not been documented that any children were baptized in Cloughjordan before the family appears in Canada.

3. Margaret O'Meara b. 1805 in Cloughjordan, Kings Co., Ireland (per her obit) and was married in 1826 in the Dunkerrin parish to Edward Morkin b. 1800.  The couple had a total of 13 children, of which 9 surviving children immigrated with their parents circa 1851 to London, Ontario, Canada.  Of the 7 baptismal records found, the children were born in Barnagrotty.

4.  Catherine O'Meara b. 1801 in Tipperary married in 1821 in the Dunkerrin parish to Michael O'Donohue b. abt. 1800.  These are my 3x gr grandparents. They are documented as having 9 children, of which 7 surviving children immigrate with thie parents to London, Ontario in 1847.  Their youngest 3 children, from 1833 - 1839, are documented as being baptized in Borrisokane parish.  The Tithe Applotment books puts Michael Donohue in Middletown, in the Borrisokane parish as well.  It isn't until 1843 and 1846 that the Poor Law Union Rate Books puts him in the town of Cloughjordan.

Michael Donohue & Catherine O'Meara's daughter, Kitty Donohue, married in London, Canada to John O'Meara.  John was supposedly not of the same line that Kitty descended from.  From my research, John O'Meara b. 1823 in Tipperary was the son of Patrick O'Meara b. 1789 and Catherine Howe b. 1788 (Hough/Haugh).  Patrick & Catherine were supposedly parents of 9 children, with the 7th child, Stephen O'Meara having been born in 1832.  The entire family immigrated to London, Canada circa 1847.  Stephen was reported in his obituary as having been born in Rapla in Tipperary.  I assumed Rapla would fall into the Nenagh parish records, not Cloughjordan, but much to my surprise, I found another O'Meara family having their children baptized in Rapla and Kilruane and this fell into the Cloughjordan parish.

That family consisted of James O'Meara b. 1789 and his wife Ellen Birmingham b. 1798.  They had 6 children baptized in Rapla or Kilruane:  James b. 1833; John b. 1834; James b. 1841; Catherine b. 1841; William b. 1844 and Ellenor "Ellen" b. 1850.  The entire family immigrated to London, Ontario, Canada circa 1851-1855.

I assume this James may be a relation to my Patrick O'Meara b. 1789.  But, I wonder why I do not find any children baptized in the Catholic parish records to a Patrick O'Meara and Catherine Howe?  Can anyone provide a recommendation on how to find information on my Patrick O'Meara and wife Catherine Howe and their children in Tipperary?  Here are the couple's known children:

1.  John O'Meara b. abt. 1823 (my gr gr grandfather - dies London, Canada); 2. Unknown O'Meara b. abt. 1821 3. Unknown O'Meara b. abt. 1825; 4. Unknown O'Meara b. abt. 1827; 5. Unknown O'Meara b. abt. 1829; 6. Dennis O'Meara b. abt. 1830 dies Rhode Island; 7.  Stephen O'Meara b. 1832 (served on the city council for about 20 years for London, Ontario, Canada; 8. Hugh O'Meara b. 1835 dies London, Canada but lived in Michigan & New York; 9.  James O'Meara b. 1837 dies London, Canada but lived in Illinois & Missouri for many years.

One last time I think is worth mentioning is that in 1824 the Tithe Applotment Books listed a James O'Meara living in Rapla, Knockindaniel and also listed was a Patrick O'Meara in the same year and same location.

Any input on how to find out more information on these families located in Cloughjordan parish, and more information on Patrick O'Meara & Catherine Howe, would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Susan O'Meara

  • Dear Susan

Welcome to Ireland Reaching and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

One of the things you will have to remember is that records for the parish do not begin until 1833 so there will be no baptism and marriage records for anyone in that parish prior to that time. As civil registration does not begin until 1864 there will be no civil birth, marriage or death records for the family before that year either (or 1845 in the case of non-RC marriages).

Unfortunately as this is the case you will be reliant on the Tithes and Griffith's Valuation and the much later 1901 and 1911 Census. The best place to start is to fill out what you know about one part of the family before moving to the next and avoid confusion. Use rootsireland..ie or familysearch to see if you can locate parish baptisms and marriages for those not living in Cloughjordan and therefore potentially available for an earlier period.

    Best wishes
