Hi there! My sister and I have found our relative Felix Somers in the 1901 census and it tracked us back to Lickfinn. We are thinking about visiting Ireland (from the USA) sometime this summer and was wondering what was around this area! We would love to see where our relatives are from but are not familiar with the area or know anyone around!

Thanks!

  • Hi Megan,  You will know that Lickfinn is situated around the middle of Co. Tipperary.  It is a townsland, so there is no village to see per se.  However there are many historical sites to see iin the surrounding towns.  Old castle in Cahir, Rock of Cashel in Cashel, Kilkenny is beautiful with many sites to see.  If you google the map you will see what is around.  Ireland is very small so you are never too far away from something interesting.  There are old castles,  grand houses and gardens,  many types of adventure holidays.  Dublin, Cork , Limerick, Galway and Waterford are cities that offer history and shopping  .  Summers in Ireland are never the same any two years so you have to be prepared for hot weather or more probably rainy warm weather.  The secret is to bring layers with you.  T-shirt, sweatshirt, light jacket, rain jacket.  Once you have these basics then you will be ready for anything the Irish weather can throw at you.

You will be very near Thurles which holds the Tipperary archives in their library.  They should be able to help regarding Lickfinn.  They might possibly be able to put you in touch with someone from the area.  Failing that you could contact the priest in Killenaule who might know exactly where Lickfinn starts and ends.  As you are driving around you wont know when you have left one townsland and entered another.  The local pub may also have some knowledge of Lickfinn.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday,

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Megan,  I looked at the 1901 census and saw from the house and building return that the house was a 2nd class house.  Houes ranged from 4th class to 1st class.   It was made of stone or brick and had two windows to the front of the house.  In the 1911 census the family are still there so you may be in luck and find the old homestead.
