I am looking for John Henning and Mary Emerson. My great grandmother Hannah came to Australia but the rest of her siblings went to America. She died in 1934 in Brisbane Queensland and her death certificate states she came from Killeen Armagh. Her father John Henning is purported to have come from Market Hill Armagh. I can't seem to find Mary Emerson, although there are a lot of them on the lists of BMD, but they don't seem to co-ordinate. I am assuming their religion was Church of Ireland, as Hannah married a Protestant lay preacher in Brisbane. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Dear Kay
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
I couldn't locate a marriage record for John and Mary but did locate one civil birth record dated 12-Nov-1865 for a child, Sarah who was baptised on 09-Dec-1865 in Markethill parish. The townland address is given as 'Killen'. John's occupation is listed as Shoemaker.
The only baptism for a Mary Emerson I could locate was for a child born 13-Oct-1820 to a father Thomas Emerson and a mother Mary. The townland is listed as Ednavin in the parish of Armagh. The family were Church of Ireland. I wouldn't be able to say for sure if this is your Mary but cannot rule it out at the same time.
I also located a death record for a Mary Henning dated 11-Jun-1874 from Killeen, Markethill who died aged 23 years. The informant on the civil death record was named as Robert Jameson a 'householder' from Kileen.

Dear Clare,
Thank you so much for that information. That is definitely the correct John and Mary Henning as I have confirmed a daughter Sarah's birth as 12 Nov 1865. John was certainly a shoemaker as that is indicated on my great grandmother's marriage certificate. My records show they had nine children and most emigrated to America. A descendant over there has given me quite a bit of information on them, but no one has any information on the parents. As far as I can understand Sarah must have stayed in Ireland because I don't have any more details on her.
The Mary Henning who died at 23yrs doesn't appear to come from this family.
Thank you again for the information and I will continue to dig for more.
Regards
Kay

I've extensively researched the name Emerson in Armagh and I'm confident that the baptism record Claire posted is the correct one.
Thomas and Mary Emerson of Edenvase or Edenaveys (various spellings) also had a son William who was named as executor to your John Henning's will and John Henning was a witness at his wedding.
I'm trying to prove a relationship between the Edenvase Emersons and the Emersons of Derryscollop (Clonfeacle Parish) which is not especially close yet both of William Emerson's wives had links to the Derryscollop Emersons.

Hello Elzabel,
Thank you for confirming the above. I have nine children listed but William wasn't one of them. I think there were more as the information I have been given leaves quite a few question marks. I would like to know where William comes in. I don't have dates for the first four children, but from 1851 I have more details. Hannah, my ggrandmother was born in 1854, John Jnr, 1851 and George, Martha, Thomas, Elizabeth as yet don't have dates. Rebecca 1862, Samuel 1863, Sarah, 1865.

The William I mentioned was William Emerson of Edenvase - brother of your Mary Emerson. Other siblings I know of were Ruth, Hannah, and Isabella. Your John Henning was a witness at Ruth's wedding and at one of William's weddings which was not at their local church. William Emerson was also a witness and named as an executor in John Henning's will. Both Emerson and Henning look to have been uncommon names in the area and Killeen and Edenvase are adjoining townlands.
The marriage of John Henning and Mary Emerson was 1839 according to the marriage bond index so the older children fit in that period. And I would be pretty sure that the Mary Henning of Killeen death record posted earlier would be another child. One would expect them to have a daughter named Mary and it's a rare name in the exact right location.
I also think John Henning and Mary Emerson did have a son named William and that this would be him:

His mother Mary died in Ballybrannon and left a will. His wife Jane Anderson was from Derryscollop!! so I'll look into him some more.
This is definitely George:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/Hockley/Ternasc…
His marriage records have his father as a farmer rather than shoemaker which is a bit odd. He named his cousin William John Emerson as Executor.

Thank you for that information, Elzabel. I have been able to add a few more bits to the family. If you are connected and there is anything you may need and I am able to help, please ask. I have the Australian branch and quite a bit of information from America where most of the siblings seem to have emigrated.

Hi Kay,
Just stumbled across this thread and was thrilled to be able to connect with you again.
So much information woven through out these posts! Once I have a chance to digest it all, I will be back to post more, but in the meantime just wanted to share a little additional information:
Sarah was one of those who moved to the US. She immigrated between 1884 and 1886 (I found two possible passenger lists 9 Jun 1884 and 19 Nov 1883) and married Robert Hayden around 1893. They lived in Manchester, Hartford County, Connecticut and had 3 children (May, John, and Robert). Her husband died young and she lived with her son Robert the rest of her life (she died in 1934 and is buried in East Cemetery in Manchester).
Your cousin, Carla (from the US)

Hi Carla, It is great to be in touch again. I have been fortunate to find some more informaton and will forward it to you after New Year. You gave me such a lot of information years ago which was very much appreciated. I just can't find much earlier stuff on John and Mary, which may be because records aren't clear or things not recorded. Anyway, this site has been very helpful and I will continue to hope there is more info out there. Will contact you soon. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Your Aussie Cousin, Kay.

Hi Clay,
Thank you very much. I now have another name to add to the list. I have John Roy and John Jnr. gathered from information sent from US by Carla (above message) a few years ago. It is great to find more family in the US. Hannah was the only sibling to come to Australia. She had six children and the family continues to increase. I would appreciate if you could give me more names, if you have any siblings, your mother's name, if possible. I have your grandmother as Elsie Eisenbrandt, if that is correct. Please let me know if you would like any information from Australia.

Clare and Elzabel,
You mention documents for John and Mary and their children. Can you tell me where I might be able to get copies of those documents?

Hello,
I'm looking for information on my great-grandmother, Martha Henning. Family records indicate she was born on 11 June 1855 in Armagh, Armagh, Ireland.
Martha married Edmond Field on 15 Jul 1876 in Rochester, New York, USA, so arrived in the USA some time prior to that. The Rochester church record lists her parents as John Henning and Mary Emerson.
Numerous DNA matches on ancestry.com also suggest that she is a daughter of John Henning and Mary Emerson by matches through their children William, George, Hannah and Samuel.
MArtha's obituary in Michigan, USA mentions her father as Henry Henning, but I'm not sure that is correct.
I have not been able to find any records of Martha's time in Ireland, and would greatly appreciate anything you can offer!
Kind regards,

Hello,
I'm researching Thomas and Mary Emerson of Edenvase, Armagh, Northern Ireland, as discussed on this Message Board.I'm wondering if Elzabel is still active on this site as she has extensively researched the Emerson families of County Armagh.
I'm particularly interested in a daughter, Mary Emerson (abt. 1820-1894 and my 2nd great-grandmother), who married John Henning of Armagh in 1839.
I've been able to trace DNA matches to the Henning side, but less to the Emerson side. I have some information on Mary's siblings William, Ruth, Hannah, Isabella (possibly a Joseph who immigrated to Australia in the mid-1850s?).
I understand from communicating with an Emerson in New Zealand that there may have been as many as 10 children in the family; 1 male 9 females.
Any information on Mary Emerson and Thomas Emerson and Mary LNU-Emerson would be MUCH appreciated.
Kind regards,
Ralph
