Hi.  I am currently researching my fathers family and i'm having trouble finding any info.

I'm looking for any information on my 2 x grandfather, John Ryan.  I know he was born in Killenaule in about

1826.  He married a Johanna O'dwyer born about 1836, in Thurles in September 1852.  From what i can find,

they came to Australia in 1854, possibly on the the ship, The General Hewitt.  He may have lied about his age

when coming to Australia.  I'm trying to find any sort of birth or baptism records of him and also information on

who his parents were.  Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The Killenaule RC pairsh records are not on Roots Ireland. Here is a link to the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0275  I would search the register for John's baptismal record.

Roots does have the Thurles records and I searched 1847-1857 for a John Ryan marriage to a Dwyer in Thurles. The only record located was in 1852. The spouse was Judith Dwyer.

  • Hi raceyr it looks as though we have something in common. John Ryan is my Great, Great Grandfather, and I am descendent of his fourth child John Patrick Ryan who was born in Spring Hill, Brisbane Queensland in 1862. They arrived in Brisbane on the General Hewitt in December 1854. John Ryan became a baker in Brisbane, and on John Patrick's birth certificate it shows that John Senior married Johanna Dwyer at Tipperary in August 1853. John Ryan had 8 children, of which only 4 survived to adulthood.

John Patrick moved with his wife Jane Hatton to Murwillumbah in Northern NSW and had 10 children all of which survived and my grandfather was his 6th child, Patrick Leo Ryan. There is a long list of John Ryan's descendents here right across Australia from Qld, NSW, Victoria and western NSW.

I didn't know that John Ryan was born in Killenaule. I have a copy of John Ryan's family tree from the marriage with Johanna Dwyer but am keen to now research further over in Ireland.

Feel free to post back if you would like further information. :)

  • Morning,

My name is Susan Klinkert Wesley...the National Library of Ireland has digitized most of the baptizmal and marriage records for the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland.  These records are free, never to be privatized.  You will need to go to the NLI website and either look up Killenaule or Killenaule/Molyglass, both in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly, County Tipperary, Ireland. RCC name is St. Mary's.

Once you get that far, you can search by marriage date and actually view the records.

O'Dwyer/Dwyer is all over the records for St. Mary's - I know because I have been researching my Kelly/Perdue roots and have just recently started trying to figure out my Dwyer ties.  My 2X's great grandmother, Mary McCormick Mulligan died in Utica, New York, USA in January of 1895.  Her death certificate shows her parents as John and Mary Digman, not McCormick.

In addition to daughters and sons as survivers, she left a brother James Dwyer, Albany, New York.  A Mulligan cousin and I have been searching in vain for this Dwyer connection in Albany, New York.

Do any of you have ties to the McCormick's, Digman's or do you have a Dwyer relative that immigrated to the Upstate New York, USA area - Albany through Utica?

Looking forward to hearing from any of you.

  • Hello Susie.  I was perusing Tipperary message boards for Dwyer/O'Dwyer and noticed you are looking for a James Dwyer, Albany, NY.  I suggest you check out the message board for Ardmayle, Tipperary.  Art Kirwin is connected to James Dwyer, Albany (Arthur R. Kirwin, Irving, Texas arkjr35@gmail.com).  I have corresponded with Art for a possible connection to our Daniel Dwyer (Mary Hackett) who emigrated to Canada in 1839 from Boherlahan-Dualla.

Thomas Dwyer married Judith Murphy in 1826 in Boherlahan-Dualla Tipperary.  Some of their family emigrated to Albany in 1864, including their son James Dwyer who married Margaret Maher in 1872, Albany.  I hope you can make a connection through Art.  Best of luck, Marilyn Dwyer, Canada

  • Marilyn,

Thank you so much for responding to my post from so long ago.  I came across your reply this mornig, 4 years after you sent it.  I recently started streaming the Mass from St. Marys in Killenaule, County Tipperary, Ireland.  I was forwarding the information to a cousin but needed to know the time difference between where she lived in New York State and Killenaule.  In my search for the time difference, I came upon your response tied to IrelandXO.

My 2X's Great Grandmother, Mary McCormick Mulligan, died in 1895, Utica, New York.  In her obituary she lists her living children and a brother, James Dwyer.  That she had a brother and he was named James Dwyer threw me for a loop as I hd never heard of the name or the relationship of brother.

You had suggested I try contacting Arthur J. Kirwin of Irving TX.  His email link was in your reply.

I tried emailing Arthur J. Kirwin twice with my information.  Both emails came back as rejected.  Do you have another way I could contact him?  My email is:  susiemwesley@gmail.com

Thanking you in advance for any help you can provide.

    Sincerely,

    Susie Wesley
