I have recently located baptismal records and a marriage record for my HOGAN family in Kilkenny, dating to the early and mid-1800s. The records center around Freshford, Cloran (Bonnettstown), and Dunningstown.

Patrick HOGAN m. Bridget FITZPATRICK

children:

  • Mary  b. 1802, baptized Freshford
  • John b. 1804, baptized Freshford. I believe John died in Southbridge, Massachusetts, 1864.
  • Bridget b. 1809 Cloran, baptized St. Canice
  • James b. 1816 Cloran, Baptzied St. Canice
  • Daniel b. 1818, baptized St. Canice.

Daniel married Elizabeth (Betty, Eliza) BREEN 1850 St. Patrick's.  Eliza was the daughter of Eward BREEN and Winfred COOGAN.

  •        son Edward, born 1850, baptized St. Patrick's
  •        son Patrick, born 1852 Dunningstown, baptized St. Canice

Daniel and Eliza emigrated between 1852 and 1857, not sure what year. The first child I found born in the USA was Bridget b. 1857, Oxford, MA. They settled in Southbridge, MA, USA.

Their son Patrick married Jennie Callaghan in Boston 1885. They settled in Philadelphia.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Great news that you were able to find records in the early 1800s. How can we help you?

  • Hello Roger,

Thanks for your offer of help. I have not been able to locate birth, marriage, or death records for Patrick Hogan and Bridget Fitzpatrick. It's also very difficult narrowing down an ancestor in the Valuation or Tithe records when their name is so common.

Seeing that they indicated several different townlands as their residence, would it be safe to assume that they were tenant farmers?   I'd love to know more of their story, their ancestors, and what happened to them.

As for Daniel and Eliza, I've searched up and down for a passenger record, but have come up with nothing.

    Many thanks.

I was unable to find the marriage record. Likely they were not married in Freshford or they were married in Freshfor prior to 1799 when marriage records start for that parish.

I'm sure they were tenant farmers. Likely Patrick and Bridget died pre-1864 when civil registration started.
