Hi, My Ancestor was born in 1838 in Co. Cavan. We have her name as McEnroe but Depending on which certificate you are reading, her Maiden name is listed variously as McEnroe, Mclnroe, MacKinroe, McKinnon, Munroe, Munrow, Munro
On the death certificate her father name is given as Charles McEnroe. Elsewhere (cemetery records) her mother is also called Ellen. She was RC. and emigrated to NZ around 1966/67, getting married as soon as she got here. We have been searching online for a number of years for more info but havnt got far. I have a membership to Roots i.e., and there are 2 Ellen McEnroes around that time but different parent names. I don't have a parish for her. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. We are traveling to Ireland in April/May and would love to have a more definitive place to visit. In NZ she married a man from. Limerick Cornelious O'Keeffe, and I am also looking for more information on his parents. Again thanks so much for this forum to ask questions when we get stuck.

Veronica:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
www.askaboutireland.ie has the Griffiths Valuations records. The Co. Cavan survey was done around 1855. If you search McEnroe Charles in Cavan, you get six records but possibly there are two duplicates so lets say four Charles McEnroes in Cavan. This all presumes that the father of Ellen was alive in 1855. I then looked at the corresponding RC parishes for the four civil parishes: Drumgoon, Larah, Castlerahan and Kilbride. Laragh RC parish does not have records until 1876 which would explain why you are unable to find a record on Roots Ireland. The townland was Drumlane in Larah civil parish.
This is all speculation on my part but at least you have a possible lead.
Let me know if you have questions and have a great time on your trip.

Thanks so much Roger, that defiantly looks like an interesting lead. And the way you explain the process is so helpful for us amateurs. I really appreciate your time.

Hi Veronica,
I realise your message was posted in 2016 - over 8 years ago - but I hope you still are able to access this. Ellen McEnroe is my great-great-grandmother. Like you, I have also been searching for information regarding her and her husband Cornelius O'Keeffe. I have not been able to find any birth/baptism records for either of them, nor their names on any passenger ship list. I have two photographs which I am trying to establish whether they are Cornelius and Ellen O'Keeffe - but unfortunately no-one in my immediate family is alive to give me an answer. I would be delighted to hear if you have had any further success.
