Looking for any information on Andrew Brady and Nellie Lawler living in County Caven, Ireland.  Born around 1750-1762.  Married around 1780.   They had two sons that I know of Thomas born around 1780 and John born around 1797.  The sons emmigrated to Canada around 1825.  Thomas married Mary Anne Gartland in County Caven around 1800 and they had 5 children.   Two boys and 3 girls.  Mary Anne Gartland died around 1825 in County Caven and Thomas then came to Canada with the children settling in Prescott County, Ontario.  Any help with finding any information on the Brady, Lawler or Gartland families of County Caven would be greatly appreciated.  Suse.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Most of the RC parishes in Co. Cavan do not have records back to the 1800 time period. Looks like only 5 of 31 RC parishes have register that go back to the early part of the 19th century. I searched on Roots Ireland for children of Thomas Brady with a spouse with the surname Gartland but no records were available.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing. Possibly you will match someone with Brady, Lawler or Gartland connections.

  • Roger,

Thank you very much for searching Roots Ireland for the children of Thomas Brady and Mary Anne Gartland.   It would have been great to access their baptism recordsand the record of their parents marriage.

I only know of the two sons of Andrew Brady and Nelly Lawler coming to Canada Thomas and his brother John and as the Catholic families of Ireland are usually large I was hoping to connect with their siblings descendents still living in County Cavan.

Thomas and John Brady both prospered in Canada.  They both started out by obtaining land to farm in Prescott County in Ontario.  The area  was eventually called Bradyville after the two brothers.  After a royal visit the place name was then changed to Alfred which it is still called today.   Thomas built a hotel and held many public official positions in the town (Reeve, coroner etc.).  His brother John moved to Ingersoll, Oxford, Ontario and also built and ran a hotel.

A fact that might interest you,  John Brady married Rachel McDonell/McDonnell  born about 1799 to Angus McDonel/McDonnel and Margaret Grant in Charlottenburgh, Glengary, Ontario on July 16, 1822.

Thanks again for all you help.

  • Hi Suse,

I literally came across your inquiry today while conducting a completely random google search for the surname, "Brady", in Prescott, Ontario - we have a confirmed genetic link using the autosomal DNA search that Roger had suggested to you.

My great-great-great grandfather, Robert Carney, who was married to Rose Anne Brady, immigrated from Ireland in the 1830's and settleted in Prescott, Ontario.  My great great grandfather, Andrew Carney, worked in the harbor in Ogdensburg, NY, and his son, Robert Carney, my great grandfather, moved to my home city of Syracuse, NY, where he married into the Behan family, from Listowel, Co. Kerry.

My oldest brother recently took the autosomal DNA test from Ancestry.com and within this past week, found a direct link with a decendant of Rose Anne Brady (they've been exchanging messages via Ancestry.com but from what I understand, this relative doesn't know what county their Brady ancestor came from).  I'd certainly be curious as to whether we share a common Brady ancestor - we've been trying to figure out for years what county the Carney's came from and, having read your inquiry from this past May, I'm curious as to whether they may have come from Co. Cavan.

    Thanks!

    Andy

    Hi Andy,

Great to find someone else researching Brady's in Canada as well as in Ireland.   John & Thomas both had farms in Alfred, Prescott County, Ontario, Canada.  It was initially called Bradyville (after the two brothers) before it was changed to Alfred, Ontario.   There is also a town called Prescott in Grenville County in Ontario and people sometimes get the two places confused.   The countyof Prescott and the town of Prescott.   The counties are very close together so it makes for a lot of mix ups.  Were Robert Carney and Rose Anne Brady married in Ireland and then immigrated or did they meet in Ontario, Canada?  By accessing the 1800's census we should be able to confirm whether Robert and Rose settled in Prescott County or Prescott, Ontario.  From my info it looks like Thomas was born around 1780 and his brother around 1797 so that their siblings could have been born anywhere between 1775-1780 and 1800-1805 in County Caven which would have been child bearing years for their mother.  I am hoping because they prospered in Canada that some of their siblings or their siblings children would have at some point immigrated to the area.  If I come across anything about Rose Anne Brady I will let you know and I hope that in your research you will continue to update me on any information you come accross concerning the Brady's.   Thanks for getting in touch and sharing your information with me.
