Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Did your McEnaneys leave Ireland before 1900 or are they more recent in Ireland? There were 170 McEnaneys and 170 McGoughs in the 1911 census for Co. Monaghan. Marron was a more common surname with over 350 Marrons in the 1911 census in Monaghan. Might help to indicate the parents names of the five children which might help others reviewing your message.

Thank you Roger. I did not expect such a quick reply! Many thanks! Michael McEnaney and Mary Reilly were the parents and my grandad John certainly emigrated to England before 1900. I know they had a farm near Carrickmacross
My great aunt Catherine McEnaney married James McGough and they had 5 children: Agnes b1895 Catherine b1890 Ellen 1881-1964,James b1884 and Mary b 1886
Is the 1911 Monaghan census available online?

John:
Here is the link to the 1901 and 1911 census site http://census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
I tried to find your McEnaneys and McGoughs but was unsuccessful. Likely the surnames have a slightly different spelling on the census so you may want to try different variants for both surnames.

These comments about the McEnaneys in Monaghan are very interesting; however the McEnaneys I am looking for were born a lot earlier. My gg grandfather Thomas was born around 1827, but I have no clue as to his parents or siblings. What I do know is that Thomas married Margaret Ellen Grimes around 1847...had a daughter Mary around 1848 and then came to America in 1850.I have the info of his children and grandchildren (Albany NY USA) but need to know his parents and siblings and the Grimes parents and siblings. I only have one reference of a McEnaney...found in. Missing Fried ad....a brother Francis McEnaney b @ 1826 who was last heard from when he was on his way to Austrailia @1854. The link between Thomas and Francis may be correct....Thomas named one of his sons Francis who was born in Albany @1852. Francis is also my great grandfather...any help you can give would be very much appreciated! Thank you.

I located a newspaper notice that your ancestor Thomas posted in the April 1858 Boston Pilot seeking information on his brother Francis McEnany, age 28, of Carrickmacross, who sailed from Liverpool in July 1854 for Melbourne, Australia.
Located a death notice for Thomas: Death Notice in Albany's Atlas and Argus newspaper: August 23, 1860:: "On the 22nd inst; Thomas McEnany in the 38th year of his age. The friends and acquaintances of the family are respectfully requested to attend his funeral from St. Patrick's Bowery on Friday, the 24th inst; at 3 o'clock PM". And this: Although Thomas died on August 22, 1860, he was interred in St. Agnes Cemetery on August 6, 1914. A source at St. Agnes' Cemetery explained that Thomas undoubtedly was one of those who had originally been buried in a cemetery in Washington Park in Albany, New York. He was then reburied at St. Agnes Cemetery with Ellen McEneny (his wife), John and James Grimes.(relatives of Ellen .whose maiden name was Grimes..)
Thomas appears on the 1860 census in Albany, NY; occupation butcher: Name AgeThomas McAnaney 36; Ellen McAnaney 31; James Grimes 28; Patrick McAnaney 11; Frances McAnaney 9; John McAnaney 6; Mary C McAnaney 4; Margeret E McAnaney 1; Patrick Conlon 25; Ann Campbell 20.
An unsourced tree lists Thomas' father as Bernard McEnaney . . . The same tree lists Margaret Ellen Grimes' father as John Grimes, and her brothers as James (1824-1906), Francis (1829), William (1842-1897), and Bernard (1843-1905).
My ancestor Arthur McInaney, was born in Monaghan or Tyrone circa 1820. My mom is matching numerous people that trace to various McAnaneys (spelled different ways) that immigrated to New York (Arthur immigrated to Canada). I'd be interested in knowing if you've done autosomal DNA testing. I am using it to break down brick walls, particularly with my ancestors in Ireland . . .
