My G grandfather was a Francis Ward and his wife Mary Ann Colhoun and I think they lived in Pomeroy. My grand father was James Ward and he joined the Royal Marines (in Glasgow in 1882). Am trying to get records of them and the rest of the family. They were Roman Catholics and I know records are limited. Which church are they likely to have attended?

Ian:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I located a January 1861 baptismal record for a James Ward with father Francis and a mother Mary Ann Colhern (the transcription may have been incorrect). The record was in the Kildress RC parish which is north of Pomeroy. The family was in Gortreagh townland. Not sure of th civil parish. I will look for a marriage record.

I located an October 19th 1853 marriage record for Francis Ward and Mary Ann Colquhoun (transcription may have been incorrect). They were married in the Desertcreight/Cookstown parish which is just to the north of Pomeroy. No address info provided. Civil registration of RC marriages started in 1864.

Found a March 6th 1855 baptismal record for a Patrick Ward in the Kildress parish records http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0221
Parents Francis Ward and Mary Colhern located th record on Roots Ireland. They were living in Keenaghan townland. There must have been a connection to a McDonnell/McDonald family from the sponsor names.

Thanks Roger - I had managed to get a little of the information but you have confiremed and extended my tree. My grandfather James Ward signed up to the Royal Marines in Glasgow in 1883, why he was in Glasgow I don't know but on his record it looked as if he came from a townland called Kilannen (which does not exist in Tyrone but given it was an English officed writing down his details I think Keenaghan is the right place. As he married out of RC his family would have nothing to do with him other than (from my sisters who remember an Uncle Pat) so I think you have got the right family. Mc donald or Mc Donnell is new to me so will havr to work on that link. I was also wonderimng what happened to the rest of the family so will hav to do a lot more work. Thanks again

Hi Ian
James Ward was my great-great-uncle. He is one of my GGGF's relatives that I have little information on.
I think that the townland that you're having difficulty with is "Killeenan, Cookstown, Co Tyrone".
Please post what info you have. Roger McDonnell (above) has posted some relevant info, hopefully I'll be able to share more.

I have quite a lot of information about James - he was my Grandfather (I was born late in life to my parents). James joined the Royal Marines in Glasgow, married a Hettie Hodges in Plymouth and my father was born in 1900 in Edinburgh. James died in 1910 in Glasgow. If you let me have your e-mail address I can send you more information about his life and the rest of the family. Who was your GGGFs name - I have some of his siblings which I found out about in July in the library in Dublin. Killeenan seems to fit with the scribble on his enrolement record for the Marines - thanks for this. Have attached what I have written about James

Hi Gerry and Ian,
I came across this site while researching my mum's side of the family. Her father's parents Patrick and Margaret Campbell m.s Ward. They were both from the Cookstown area. According to their eldest daughter Margaret's birth certificate they were married on the 17th January in 1901 in Cookstown. They had five children. The first three children (girls) all born in Scotland and then two boys born in Tyrone possibly Cookstown area in 1906 (Patrick) and 1907(John my mum's dad).
My Mum knew very little about her grandparents. Margaret Campbell (Ward) died in 1930. Her death cert states that her father is Francis Ward and mother Mary Ann Ward (Colquhoun). Patrick Campbell lived until he was 92 and died in 1970.
I showed my mum the picture of James Ward and my Mum has the same picture. She said that it was her Grandmother's brother. On the back if the back if the picture it says Jim Ward. This was written by Patrick and Margaret eldest daughter. She has pictures of her Grandparents.
Gerry I hope you don't mind me sending you an email. Maybe you can pass it on to Ian. I attached my mum's picture if James Ward. Hopefully you can help with our family tree.
Thank you
Kathleen

Thanks for this information - it does help in putting a few things together. Last August (I think) I sent a copy of my tree on the Wards side to Gerry (he had sent me a lot of very useful information). If you like I can send it to you. I have not had a reply from Jerry and have lost his e-mail address (all I can remember is that it is btinternet.com one).I would love to see the picture - I have a picture of James in his Royal Marines uniform. My Grandfather was James Ward and he married a Hettie Hodges from Devon and I have a picture of her with her Mother and her first two girls. If you would like to see more and continue putting trees together please e-mail me on i.ward768@btinternet.com. I was born late in life to my parents Charles Hector (James's son) so am about 15 years younger than I should be so having a GRandFather born in the 1860's is a little unusual.
