I believe I am in the correct parish of St Michans.  My gt grandfather John Tancred born 1795 in Dublin emigrated to the US in New York in May 1869 along with his son John to visit another son Michael Tancred also born in Dublin abt 1834.  John (1795) married a woman named Mary ( unknown birth or death) but assume that Mary died before 1869. John (1795) died in New York 10 months after arriving and is buried in the family plot (TANCRED) in Calvary Cemetery Woodside,Queens County,New York City. John the son b.abt 1838 married in NYC, Anna King of Ireland and lived in New Jersey until his death abt 1905.  In the mortality index of 1870 maintained by US Federal Index, there is another Michael Tancred born in Dublin 1799 who died of consumption. This Michael had lived with the younger Michael as referenced by the address given at death. Tancred name is quite prevalent in Dublin but I am not certain whether they all settled in Liverpool and then came to NY.  This is one of the walls that I have come up against.  You can read more on my ancestry.com site...Herlihy,Tancred,Hazel,Keogh. • Hi Bob, I posted a long winded reply to you ,but it seems to gone astray somewhere, anyway the guts of it is that Im a bit of a collector of Tancred info in ireland, and anywhere else that  relates here.Ive never counted them but I cant place yours, There is a John Baptised in 1795 to a Nicholas and Margaret Madden, but then a second John is born in 1798 to the same couple, likely the first died, and Nicholas father was John,. There is a Michael Born 1833 to a Michael and and Mary at the Pro cathedral, and another to a Peter and Mary,The other John of this age was a Butcher and Emigrated to New Zealand and I know that he did go there and not US. Ive looked again at St Michans church records to see if I missed anything or the fact that Tancreds have been called everything,Tankards Tankreds etc. You can look yourself through Irish Genealogy site. Its a great place to look. There is a Family in the UK 1841 Census which has a Michael and John which match your dates.Your in the time when a brother died and his brother took on his children with not too much shouting. If you come back and say they were from Ireland,Then Ill keep looking with you. Best Myles Brady.

  • Thank You searcher....I had taken a hiatus from this my favorite hobby ....next to golf..I tend to lean toward the UK census of 1841 that you point out is more closely in the correct timeline. I appreciate your assistance and I will plod on.

  • Hi Bob, I was looking at the Tancreds in USA and came across your John born about 1838 and married a Anna King, their daughter Married a Joseph Colman in New York which Im sure you know all about, but I also came across Johns Naturalization record October 1868, on most of those it tells where the person was from ( country) but that one says" see other side" I cant get to see the other side here but maybe you can. The Irish usually have "Ireland" and British " Britian and Ireland" . The very next one is Michael, poss the one you spoke of, and his says English.  It might clear up you question or maybe not  Best of luck  Searcher

Searcher...just noticed your alert.  In speaking with some relatives a bit older than myself ..anyone from Ireland coming in to the States was identifed as being 1st a Great Britain citizen and then an Irish citizen. I am sending that document you reviewed as well as the rear page.  Regards Bob H

  • Hi Bob , thanks for coming back on that.  Had a quick look at the reverse side and I will have to work on it and come back to you, i had noticed that on side one the witness to  his naturalization was a David Sanford, Sanford is one of the names I check when looking for Tancreds/Tankards as it is unusual and When someone reads it  , the ankard  when signed looks like anford and then the T could be an S and it becomes Sanford  Is there a David Tankard in the mix somewhere..   Ill come back on whats written soon  Best Myles Brady    Just noticed Bob, in your origional message you said that JOHN AND jOHN went over in 1869 and John died 10 months later, but John jnr. was naturalized in 1868 OCT.  is that just a simple mistake  Best for now

  • Hi Bob, I did all sorts of things with that 2nd page to try and improve it,The only thing im sure of is United Kingdom, sorry about that, also just to be sure I went through St Michans Baptism records and Marriage records and the only Tancreds I came to Was a Jane and a Margaret born to a John Tancred and Margaret Connor in 1787 and 1789 with nothing to match them with, Yes they could be sisters of John (1795) or anyone elses. We were all in UK then, like it or lump it and the some of the Tancreds had no problem going from one country to the other. Always wondered how You came up with St. Michans Parish?  Best for now Myles

  • Hi again, again,       Niamh, I must be getting old, it did'nt register yesterday, thats the Tancreds of Little Mary Street Dublin.    Josephine married Jeremiah 25-4-1917 and they had children, Edward. 1918, Jeremiah 1920, John 1922 and a Philip 1930 .   Jeremiah was a Postman, the address was Little Mary st. on all. You will know the family name Im sure.  Still cant tell you who is there now, but I have a memory of someone connected to the family in the 2000nds so possible worth checking.   Best Myles
