I have  MACKEY, William (b. 1838 - d. 1921 in Schenectady, NY).  Married DAY/O'DEA, Mary in 1865 Albany, NY

On some Civil War information his parents are listed as Richard and CARL, Mary. Could it be CARROLL/O'Carroll?  Maybe it was recorded by what they heard?

On another Civil War document William lists his home as Kilkenny.

I have found records (Griffith's) with MACKEY and CARROLL in Mulinnavat, Mooncoin and Derrynahinch but I have no idea if I'm on the right track.

William is the only person I have in this line.  William and Mary had Richard, Mary Ann, Thomas Edward and William, Jr.

I have tried finding siblings of William, marriage record for Richard and Mary and have been unsuccessful.

Thank you for any information.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked Roots Ireland and there was one 1838 baptismal record in Co. Kilkenny. See transcription below. There were also three 1839 records. Without knowing the parents names, it will be hard to confirm any of these records.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

I mentioned that his parents were listed as Richard and Mary Carl but I'm wondering if it's CARROLL.  I checked Rootsireland.ie too and some maybes but nothing conclusive.

I have done DNA testing with Ancestry and FTDNA and am on Gedmatch as is my uncle.

    Thank you,

We may have a breakthrough. See transcription below. He may have made himself younger when he came to America. Also, it shows Bridget Carroll not Mary Carroll. The townland is Pollrone in Pollrone civil parish in southwest Kilkenny.

    Let me know.

I'm so glad you posted that one as a possibility.  I have that record too but wasn't sure if I was being too eager.  I am going to keep it but I wonder if the stretch to Bridget from Mary is a long one.  What do you think?

Are there any other resources I should be looking at? It's hard to use some since I have no idea where they're from AND I don't have any other family members to cross reference with.

Thank you for all your help!

No other resources except to review the parish register for Mooncoin  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0975

  • My Mackey lived in Gaulstown in Cty Kilkenny.  (Mary Mackey married Nicholas Mullins).   I see them in Glenmore, Kilkenny, Ossory diocese.  Another little hamlet they had a child in is Flemingstown and Bally Unreadable.

Their offspring settled in Brooklyn, NY.
