I am researching Laurence Dermott (Gaelic: Lorcán Mac Diarmada Ruadh) born about 1720 in Strokestown and died in London in 1791.
I have his father as Thomas Dermott born Dublin about 1690 and died in Loughglynn, Roscommon year unknown.
I would welcome any information on this family please, including Laurence's mother's name and date of birth which I do not have.
Thanks

Dear Trevor
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Records for that RC parish don't begin until the 1830s so there will be no baptisms or marriages for anyone before that time. The name would have been quite numerous in the northern counties but not in Roscommon. There are no instances of that surname in the later Griffith's Valuation, for example 1847-1864.
It might be a good idea to keep an eye on the Early Birth and Marriage Index. It is updated regularly and if your ancestor doesn't appear now, they may in the future.
Feel free to add your ancestor's details to our XO Chronicles. You can learn more about it HERE and it might be another avenue to consider so that your ancestor's details can be seen by others.
Best wishes

Hello,
I have a bit more information now about Laurence Dermott.
He was probably born in June 1720 in Strokestown. His father Thomas was born 1690 in Dublin, and was a merchant in Dublin. What I really want to know is Laurence's mother's name. According to something Laurence wrote later in his life whilst living in London his mother died when he was very young and his father maried again. Its quite possible she died shortly after childbirth.
The other information I have is that the family name was most likely to be McDermott or McDermott Roe. This latter seems to be a well known 'clan'.
I would appreciate if anyone could take a new look at this for me. I am a registered user for https://www.irishancestors.ie/ and, as suggested by Clare a year ago, I did a search on the early birth index. It did not reveal anything.
Thanks
