Looking for info on Michael Heaton, left for America in 1854 or later with his wife Annie Cahill Heaton, and son, James. They then lived in Schuylkill Co, Pennsylvania. I don't know anything about parents or other family members. Found some Heatons in Balliree but am not sure if they're related.
I'd really appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Paul

Michael Heaton is also listed in the 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Birr civil parish living in Ballinree townland.http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/offaly/birr.htm There were also four other Heaton records in the parish including a Denis in Ballinree.

  • Not sure if this is your Michael Heaton but there is a Patrick Heaton born about 1783 who married an Honora born about 1791, about 1806 in Crinkle Birr, Offaly. They had 7 children all born at Crinkle Birr, Offaly: John b. abt. 1807; Ralph b. abt.1809; Patrick b. abt. 1811; Michael b. abt. 1816; Bridget b. abt. 1817; Tomothy b. abt. 1818; and Honor b. abt. 1821. I have only followed the trail of Bridget who married John Coughlan in Birr in 1836.

  •      Frank,

Thanks so much for your kindess in contacting me. I don't know what to think. Michael, John and Honora (Nora) are all names in my family, but the dates puzzle me. My records show Michael, whom you referred to above, was born about 1823. I don't know how important exact dates were in Ireland then or here in America. So it could easily be my people. I just don't know what to make of the dates.

    Thougths? Again, thank you.  Paul

  • Hi Paul. I don't have any other info except that the names and ages of the Heatons came from the 1821 Census of Ireland as below (the dates of birth are my additions based on the ages from the census):

1821 Census of Crinkle, Birr, Co. Offaly: Townland of Crinkle, Parish of Birr, Barony of Ballybrett, County of Kings
    Pat Heaton, 38 (b. 1783) Brogue Maker
    Honor, wife, 30 (b. 1791)
    John, son, 14 (b. 1807)
    Ralph, son, 12 (b. 1809)
    Pat, son, 10 (b. 1811)
    Bridget, dau, 8 (b. 1813)
    Michael, son, 5 (b. 1816)
    Tim, son, 3 (b. 1818)
    Honor, dau, under 1 (b. 1820)

Maybe this isn't your direct family; perhaps your family is the line of a brother of Pat ? After all, each son in Irish families seemed to use many or all of the family names, which does complicate matters. So you could get brothers having sons and daughters with the same names.

I have seen a message board on Ancestry.com where someone was also searching for this family and mentioned some of the names, inlcuding Ralph, but I am no longer a subscriber to Ancestry so cannot check this.

So, unless I come across anything else, I can just wish you the best of luck in your search.

  • Hi Paul, again. I googled Michael Heaton of Birr and this link to the Ancestry.com Message Board came up headed

    Heaton - Birr - Offaly - Ireland

    http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=152&p=surnames.heaton

In the messages there is mention of Heaton children going to USA.

Hope this gives you a lead.

  • Paul. I found the marriage of Michael Heaton and Ann (as mentioned above). The exact spelling is Michael Heaton married Ann Cahal 20 Nov 1851 at Baliboy and Killoughy, Meath, Offaly (alternative parish names given: Balliboy, Ballyboy, Ballyboy and Killoughy, Kilcormac, Killoughey, Killoughy).

I doubt the Heatons of Crinkle Birr are direct relatives.

  •     Frank, Thank you so much for the help. One response in the message board lines up with the dates of my Michael's brother, so I will contact that person. Frank, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. I keep trying to push back my research one generation at at time. I think you have given me the lead that lets me do that. Paul

  • Paul,

I found your post after a search for the surname Heaton. Now I wonder if your Heaton ancestors are related to mine as mine also immigrated to Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. My ancestors were John Heaton (born about 1816) and his wife, Margaret Guinan (born about 1819). They immigrated to Schuylkill County about 1842 with oldest son Carey (also spelled Kerin/Keran/Caron on various documents), who was born about 1839. Carey my 2nd great-grandfather. I have not been able to find any documents that indicate where in Ireland they came from, but Griffith's Valuation seems to indicate that the surnames Heaton and Guinan were only found in the Birr parish in Co Offaly so I hope I am on the right track here. Since Kerin is not a very common name, I had thought I might be able to find his baptism record (and I assume his name was actually Kieran), though I've had no luck at all. I have also been unable to find any record of John and Margaret's marriage. If anyone locally has any information, I'd greatly appreciate it. And Paul, if you've done a DNA test, can you message me and I can see if perhaps we're a match?
