  • Hi Abby,

I have come across a McOwen family in Utica, NY c. mid-late 1800s as I have been researching my own McOwen (sometimes spelled McKeown/McKeon) roots in nearby Redfield, NY (Oswego Co.)  I haven't been able to connect my family to the Utica group unfortunately, so I haven't held onto any of their information.  If memory serves me, one of the Utica McOwens was a physician.

A really good resource is a historical newspaper database that extensively covers New York State is "Old Fulton NY Post Cards" at  http://fultonhistory.com  and it is FREE! The homepage is sort of weird, just hit the "ENTER" button and the search bar/parameters are on the left.

Another resource is the Northern New York Library Network.  They have been working on digitizing historic newspapers from the northern counties of NY so they have some of the small, local papers and those that were only printed short periods.  The website is:  http://nnyln.org  it is also free.   Just go the the home page, click on "Digital" in the bar and then "NYS Historic Newspapers" to start your search.  I have found the searchable database is not very accurate and I have stumbled upon relevant articles that did not respond to a name search by simply scanning through papers from certain dates (ie I knew about when someone had died), etc.

I hope that helps you some.

I, myself, have been trying to research the Irish origins of my McOwen family.  My G-G-Grandfather came to US from Ireland before 1849, and his older brother came over c. 1842 (they originally settled in Saugerties, Ulster Co. NY before moving to Redfield, NY).  I have been unable to trace them prior to that.  So if you have any information on McOwens in Ireland, I would love to share.

    Happy New Year!

    Molly McOwen

  • 1. I don't have any siblings but I do have his children, 2 of which were born in Ireland - Thomas b. 1876 and Felix b 1880. Thomas apparently stayed in Ireland and came to the US as an adult. Felix immigrated with his parents, we thinkg, around 1881. Thank you for looking.

2/ My Patrick was not a physician and I don't know any of his family of that generation. His son, Peter became a doctor but practiced in Youngstown, Ohio.

    Thanks for posting,

    Abby
