My great grandfather, Michael James McPHILLIPS was born in Aghabog on 14 Apr 1848. He emigrated to Michigan, USA in 1869. His parents were Patrick McPHILLIPS and Mary SMYTH. His siblings were John (B:8150), Susan (B: 1855), Catherine (B: 1856), Rosa (B: 1857) and Owen (B: 1860). All but Owen emigrated to Michigan, USA. I believe the McPHILLIPS' lived in either Tonagh or Liscumisky townlands (or both). I've been distinctlyunsuccesful finding any birth, marriage or death records for this family in Ireland. Patrick McPHILLIPS' parents were possibly John McPHILLIPS and Jane DEVLIN, but I have no records to verify that.  The McPHILLIPS' were Roman Catholics and I've been trying to determine which church they may have attended (St. Livinus - Killeevan) so I might find the cemetery they're buried in. Is anyone familiar with this family?

  • Th records for the years of birth of Michael & siblings are not available on www.rootsireland.ie/ or on the nli RC registers for Aghabog I'm afraid.

There are no death/burial records for Aghabog either.

The Tithe Applotments (free online) have 19 McPhillips in Aghabog 1833

No luck in the 1841 or 51 Irish Censuses.

Griffiths Valuation has 35 in Aghabog 1858

  • Thank you. I think my only hope now is to find headstones that may contain some information about my family or a distant relative with family information.

  • Kevin:

Liscumiskey would be really close to St. Mary's RC church in Latnamard/Aghabog. My family is from there and the McPhillips names is all over that area.  Somewhere in my hard drive I have the headstone readings for that graveyard. I'll look to see if any McPhillips are buried there. I'd bet there are some.

  • I hope some of those McPhillips are the ones for whom you're looking. That would be neat if it was.

I live in Wisconsin so I've never been to St. Mary's myself, but it sure looks like a pretty church and I'm hoping to visit soon. It's a pretty small community, so I'll bet your Gr Gr grandfather was buddies with mine. Nobody with my last name lives there now, but I do communicate on FB with a relative by marriage whose name is Smyth, a family to whom you too are apparently related by marriage. The Smyth's live just a few hundred yards from that church.

I've been looking into my family from this area for a few years now so when I saw the name McPhillips, I had a hunch because I've come across it so often. In the early 1900's Someone from your family and someone from mine were the local representatives  for The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH). I can send you more on that if you're interested.

    Regards,

    Ted

  • My great grandmother was Anna McPhillips, Cresco, Iowa, married to Patrick Woods. Her parents immigrated in 1856 from New Bliss, Monaghan. Dad- Thomas McPhillips (1800-1904) and Margaret Sullivan (1808-1856- buried at sea). Their children were Thomas, Catherine, Rosa and Anna. I also have a Woods connection- Felix Arthur Woods (b:1798) married to Anna MacPhearson (b:1798). Supposedly the Woods family had a castle in northern Ireland. Any connections? Connie

  • I also have McPhillips from Aghabog.  Unfortunately it would appear none you mentioned above. naturally :)

The lack of records is very disconcerting and It is really one of my major brickwalls.

I have my 3 x Great Grandmother Rose Ann McPhillips on her marriage certificate in Australia states she is from there - she was Roman Catholic and had no reason to tell untruths.  I have uncovered the following information so far.

    Rose Ann McPhillip

BIRTH 1 AUG 1834 • Aghabog, Ireland, United Kingdom

    DEATH 4 NOV 1905 • Wangaratta

Her Father - I have his death certificate.

    Dennis McPhillips

BIRTH 1793 • County Monaghan, Ireland

DEATH 1 MAR 1873 • Aghaclay County Monaghan, Ireland

Her Mother  - Her mother cud be McArlde/Mcardle/McCarvill/Mcarvill  I simply can't find her.

    Rose McArdle  (Roseana/Roseanne/Rose Ann)

    BIRTH ABT 1795 • Ireland  -  guessing

DEATH 1652383 - another relative has this number on their tree, I've asked what it is for but no response.

I have found Dennis in the tithe books and according to what I have found Rose Ann went to Australia in 1855 , how I don't know.  There is also a Catherine McPhillips and I'm not sure if it is her sister or cousin went there in 11 Sep 1849 • Port Phillip Bay, Australia.  Prior to that there was a Hugh McPhillips - BIRTH 1817 • Lismagonway, Aghabog, Co Monaghan Ireland - and his wife Mary Ellis and two children - Patrick and Ellen.   I'm not 100% it is her brother except it states on Marriage cert she married at Whittlesea which is where Hugh was living.   I think more that Catherine and Hugh where brother and sister and Rose Ann was a cousin.  but can't prove any of it as there are no records.

I do know the McPhillips Clan are big in Aghabog I have been informed there at something like 11 different McPhillips families but none related.   They would be but further back but again no proof.  There is a facebook page where they are trying to get all the information together but it's gone quiet for the moment.   I really just want to find some proof.

So in a nutshell this is my McPhillips conundrum :)

I've attached a photograph of the inside of St. Mary's Latnamard. This was taken in September of 2015. For the past couple years I've been attempting to determine if my GG Grandfather (Patrick McQuillan) came to America from Aghabog. I'm virtually certain the family was from Monaghan but, I'd love to know more. Patrick's father was "Terence" and there were only two in Griffith's (Tonagh, and Ummerafree). I realize it may be neither! I've tested a number of my relatives DNA and uploaded the results to Ancestry.com, GEDmatch.com, MyHeritage.com, and FTDNA.com. I'll be happy to share my kit numbers. My Monaghan ancestors landed in Boston, relocated to Providence, RI. and ultimately settled in Peoria, Illinois. I've also discovered a beautiful homily that was given at the 100th anniversary of St. Mary's by bishop MacDaid. It is a wonderful read...http://www.clogherdiocese.ie/2012/11/bishop-macdaid-mass-of-celebration…

  • To CJB - Hello, I saw your post regarding Anna McPhillips in Cresco, Iowa. Given this is a small location, I checked my paternal aunt's DNA kit for Creso, IA and a tree with Anna McPhillipsvand Patrick Woods appeared! While it is certainly possible we are connected through some other branch, this is certainly worth investigating. If this is your tree and you search on the name Mcquellon in your DNA results you should see a Colleen Schmit appear. Please feel free to drop me a line. My email address is jmcquellon@gmail.com     thanks!

I am just after reading your post. Dennis McPhillips who died in Aghaclay in March 1873, widowed, with son John present at death had lived in Liscumiskey in the farm next to my McCarvill ancestors in Liscumiskey. My ggrandfather Thomas was born 1818 in Liscumiskey and married Ann Cunningham from Aghaclay. I own about two thirds of the Aghaclay townland and I have never heard of John McPhillips living in the townland. When Covid is over I will look up the land records in Dublin Land Valuation Office to see where he lived. According to the Griffith Valuation of 1860 Dennis is listed in farm 7 in Liscumiskey.

Dennis' wife could have been McCarvill as Rose is a McCarvill family name and men did not travel far to get a wife that time,,,no petrol.

If I find anything I will post.
