I am looking for records of an ancestor named John Albert Byrne, born Sept 1811(?), wife's name is Winifred (sp). I am trying to verify residence in Dublin, or departure to U.S., or any other information possible. Any help?

  • Morning Bryan,

I had a look at Irishgenealogy.ie  you may like to check it out.I found a John Byrne b,1876. Father is Edward and Mother is Winifred. But thats just a long shot.

Have some fun looking at the Irish Genealogy Site.It also has some original Church/Chapel records.

  • The name John Byrne is very common - a search of baptisms for the name in Dublin City and County parishes for 1811 +- 5 years shows nearly 100 results, bear in mind it's possible that your John was born in a parish wihich does not have records back to 1811...

I found a John & Winifred Byrne on the US 1900 Federal Census (FamilySearch) in Pendleton, Niagara, New York could this be your Byrnes ? ... John is a Farmer with birth as Sept. 1811, Winifred as Dec. 1821, both born Ireland, and state they are married 58 years - so c1842, and immigrated abt 1849..  so possibly some of their older children born Ireland.

There's no children at home on this census - have you located the family on earlier US census returns ?

  • I think I've located the same John and 'Winefred' as 'Burns' on the US 1850 Federal Census, again in Pendleton, Niagara - this time with a few additional family - with two interesting leads.

John and 'Winefred' with similar ages/years of birth as the 1900 returns, in 1850 John is shown as a Labourer, but this return includes two children Maria age 6 born Ireland, and Rebecca age 1 born N.Y (?) - and also a 73 year old Bernard Burns born ireland - possibly John's father ?

Do you know what denomination your Byrne / Burns family were ?

  • Thank you very much. That is the John and Winifred I am looking for. Any idea how to find them in Ireland? Sorry, I don't know their denomination. The Maria (Mariah) and Rebecca, located in Pendleton/ Niagra are all correct.

  • As the most recent event in Ireland the baptism of Maria c1844 would be the best starting point - if that could be located it would give a starting parish and denomination.

Parish records for most of the Catholic and Church of Ireland parishes in Dublin City, plus a few south County Catholic parishes are available to search on the IrishGenealogy website mentioned by Kaye in the earlier reply, but a search of this for Maria/Mary with parents John and Winifred around the likely date is not showing any matches.

It's possible that your Byrne family lived somewhere outside the city, i.e. County Dublin in an area not covered on IrishGenealogy. Images of most Irish Catholic Parishes are available on the National Library Website, and indexed  on both Ancestry & FindMyPast, but nothing promising showing up in Co. Dublin there either. Plenty of Marie/Mary Byrnes with father's name John between 1838 and 1849 (over 100) but none with mother's first name Winifred or similar. Similarly nothing promising for a marriage of John & Winifred - only Byrne marriages where the bride's first name was Winifred or similar that I found that were within the likely timeframe were a Thomas Byrne in Booterstown (south east Co. Dublin) in 1839 and a Matthew Byrne in 1844 in St. Nicholas of Myra Dublin city.

Transcripts of some Co. Dublin Church of Ireland parishes are available on RootsIreland (pay-website) but nothing proming on their index in Co. Dublin for Maria either. It's possible they did live in the city but there's no record - some registers dont go back far enough, plus there are gaps in registers - faded or missing pages etc, in addition quite a few of Church of Ireland registers were lost during the Civil War.

What was the source which mentioned they come from Dublin ?

There might be a possible lead in Co. Wicklow, which is the county to the south of Co. Dublin, with a Mary Byrne bapt. in Glendalough Catholic Parish in 1843, parents are John Byrne and Winefrid Mason. There is also a marriage of a John Byrne and Winefred (no surname recorded) in the adjacent parish Rathdrum but the following year 1844.

Might birth or baptism records for that area of New York State be available for any of their children, or maybe marriage records ?  if so these might give you Winifred's maiden surname which might help the search... and could confirm, or rule out, this possibility ...

p.s. I suspect that marriage is a different couple - there are several John Byrne / Winifred couples in Co. Wicklow around this time (The surname Byrne is most common in Co. Wicklow).

  • Hi Bryan

I was piecing together the information that Shanew gave .In particular around the Emigration and the Census information.I had a look at the departure datesand I did find a ship called the Champlain traveling to the U.S.A.  via Liverpool on the 19/Sept /1847

and on its passenger list was this family.

    John Byrne age 46,Farmer.

Mrs Byrne, age 37. It was not common to address a married woman by their first name.

    John Byrne,age 12

    Ann Byrne,age 10

    Mary Byrne,age 8

This may be something or nothing, also people did not always know their correct date of birth. The Irish Census an example of ages to be used as a guideline.

    Best Regards.

    Kaye.
