My Great-Great-Grandmother, Mary Jane Brennan, was baptized at St. Peter's Athlone in 1819.  Her parents were John Brennan and Margaret (sic Cunningham).  At the time they lived in Cloongana.  John Shea and Bridget Brennan stood as Mary's sponsors.

John and Margaret had other children, including Judith, sponser at her baptism was Michael Kelly.  At this time (1806) they lived in Cushalay.

One other child, Thomas, was baptized in 1810, and Mark Cunniffe and Maria Cunningham stodd as sponsers.  At this time they lived in Athlone.

Mary eventually married a John Owens, and they emigrated to the US around 1847.  They lived in Philadelphia until 1854, when they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio.  There they ran a boarding house on the Ohio River.

Not sure if John came from Athlone area - but several Owens families did live in the area.

Would love to hear from any 'connections' or if anyone could provide additional information.  I hope to visit Athlone in the next couple of years.

  • Hi Stan

I hope someone with a connection to the family will be in touch. In the meantime please feel free to add your ancestor's details to our XO Chronicles Project. You can learn more about it HERE. It might be a good, additional avenue for others to see information about the Brennan family.

    Best wishes
