I have a marriage entry in St Mary's Kilkenny City for Nov 1826, between a George Coughlin (he is from Kilmacow) and Margaret Dalton. In the residency column on the right hand side of the page it say's "Ullid". Which looks to be on modern maps a small place (I would call it a small Hamlet, appoligies if that term is too Anglo-Saxon) to the NW of Kilmacow, about 4km.
Now I do not know if George or Margaret were resident in Ullid, or if they both were. One theory (only a theory) that Margaret could had resided there and George in Kilmacow and they went back to Margaret's home Church to be married. Or my other theory George is there and leaves and goes to Kilkenny City to marry Margaret at her home Church. Both ideas are theories.
However, does anyone know what could had been in Ullid in 1826, large house with staff perhaps? Farm with labourers?

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!
I noticed that you posted a message back in May and I responded. http://www.irelandxo.com/ireland/kilkenny/ullid/message-board/baptism-1…
Ullid is a townland (575 acres) and a very small civil parish (about 2300 acres) in southern Co. Kilkenny. It lies just to the west of the civil parish of Kilmacow. The RC parish for both civil parishes would be Kilmacow.
Both civil parishes are considerably south of Kilkenny town. I agree with your second theory:
"Or my other theory George is there and leaves and goes to Kilkenny City to marry Margaret at her home Church."

Hi Roger,
Many thanks as always for your response. It is good that someone with your knowledge can answer these questions for us. Thank you!
The second "theory" that St Mary's is Margaret's home church I assume holds some water. Which given the distance of about 45 kilometers begs the question "how in 1826, with all travel constraints limited roads, no railway, not a lot of public transport, did they meet?" Also "how would he/they have travelled?" I assume they just walked! Would that make sense?
Also was it common practice to marry in the Bride's Parish/Home Church? If the Bride say was in service/working somewhere (say Dublin or perhaps Waterford in this case: again a theory), would she and the groom generally returned to her home Parish to Marry?
Regards
John

Normally the marriage would occur in the bride's parish. If she was in service or working in a larger town, the marriage could be in that town or in her home parish depending on distance and other considerations.
I doubt that George walked to Kilkenny but somehow got transportaion to the larger town.

Quick question Roger and thank you for your help so far.
I am going to Kilkenny in May, mainly looking for graves. I know George her husband is in Kilmacow cemetery, his death is recorded in 1867. No record of Margaret's death, if she is not there with a tombstone, could she be in Kilkenny City say at St Mary's Churchyard?

I really don't know. I would expect her to be in Kilmacow but did she died before or after George? If you don't locate a civil death index record then likely she died before 1867.
