I am trying to find John Burland's Parents.  John married Martha Sherwood born about 1719 Loggan Co Wexford and Died 5 March 1795.  Their children as I know them are John born abt 1749 Ireland, Jane abt 1751, and Bartholomew Burland born about 1754 in Wicklow, Ireland and Died 27 March 1810 Wicklow, Ireland.  Bartholomew was my 5th great grandfather.  Thank you.

  • To search for Church records for dates this early you would usually need to have a farly detailed location, e.g. the town or parish, so as to check what records might be available. Very few parishes, either Catholic or Church of Ireland have records going back as far as the 1720s.. Do you know what denomination your Burland family were ?

The fact the there's a mention of children born in neighbouring County Wicklow may suggest that this family lived somewhere in the north of Co. Wexford. There are townlands of Loggan Lower and Upper in Crosspatrick civil parish County Wexford, these are located to the south east of the town of Tinahely, and right on the border between Counties Wexford and Wicklow, the townlands immediately west of Loggan Upper and Lower are in Co. Wicklow - see c1840 OSI map.

Catholic records for this area are covered by the parish of Tomacork aka 'Union of Carnew and Crosspatrick', which does have early records covering baptisms, marriages and death/burials back to 1780s and 90s, see Tomacork register images on the NLI website. Crosspatrick Church of Ireland records only seem to go back to about 1830.

There are a small number of Burland records at the time of Griffith's Valuation, which I presume you've already seen, most of these are in counties Wexford and Wicklow, plus some in  counties Dublin, Carlow, Down & Derry/Londonderry. There are also some entries as the spelling 'Burland' on the earlier Tithe records, about half in Co. Donegal and the remainder in counties Kildare, Mayo, and Armagh.
