Hi-

I am searching for information on my paternal grandmother, Norah Foley Malloy.  I believe she was born Dec. 10, 1912 in Ballyblood to James & Winifred Foley.  I know she had several siblings and when their father passed away they were all sent in different directions.  My grandmother, Norah Foley, and her sister, Ann (Anna) were both sent to New York.  I think there was a sister Theresa who was sent to England.

I seem to remember that Norah had her body sent back to Ireland for burial after her death in April of 1978.

Thank you,

Katie Malloy Busick

  • Norah was born on the 5th December 1910 at Ballyblood townland (GRO/IrishGenealogy) Co. Clare in Scariff registration district, to parents James Foley & Winifred O'Dea. James is shown as a farmer, and Norah's birth was registered on the 12th December.

The family is shown at Ballyblood on the 1911 census (National Archives), including several O'Dea relatives.

James & Winifred married on the 17th February 1909 at the Catholic Church at Tulla, the groom's residence appears to be Loughane, and his occupation Farmer, his father John is also shown as a farmer. Winifred's residence is shown as Ballyblood and her father John, a farmer. The witnesses are a Nicholas Foley and Margaret O'Neill.

The GRO Birth Index and Images show a number of other children to James & Winifred
    Thomas John 5th December 1909
    (Norah 1910)
    Annie Mary 16th March 1912
Michael Joseph Foley 27th February 1913

(The online GRO births cover up to about 1916, so there could be other children born later)

Winifred is listed with her parents John and Anne at Ballyblood on the 1901 census,  and there's also a likely match for James at Loughane North townland in 1901, with parents John and Nora.

    Dear Katie:

Thank you for posting to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.  I was the writer who sent you the email about Ellis Island earlier today. I'm glad to see that Shane was able to fill in some of the blanks through the censuses and the civil records for you. I will fill in further information about the family.

The Foleys were from the Loughane area of Tulla and the house is still standing.  While the family has left, there are cousins in the area and you can contact me for further information at: tulla@irelandxo.com

    I look forward to hearing.
