My 3rd great maternal grandfather has a grave in Abbeville, SC in the USA. On his marker it states he was from Antriim, Ireland. He was born about 1797 and died Feb. 23 1848. His name was James Martin and his wife Elizabeth Sarah. He had a son James E. Martin born also in Antrim around 1821 married to Anna E. Reid. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • The cemetery in SC is a church one, it is Lebanon Presbyterian Church. It was stated that the family was instrumental in building it in 1827. There are several families buried there that are from Antrim and Belfast. Samuel Blair and his wife Esther Crawford, David Lee Knox (8/22/1820-5/7/1864) and his wife Nancy Blair Knox (1815-6/26/1883), David Lee Knox,Sr.( died in 1840) married Isabel Jeannette Moore in 1818, William Evans immigrated in 1842 from Belfast died in 1847 he was 34 at time of death and was married to Isabella Locke who died in 1881, James Finley Gibert (6/30//1808-6/24/1883) son of Stephen Beinaime Gibert and Sarah B. Pettigrew was the pastor of the church for 44 yrs and 7 mo., David Erwin Thomas Erwin (1823) and Eliza..., Arthur Erwin immigrated in 1857, James Evans immigrated in 1838 and his son Charles Evans(1820-12/16/1893) was an elder of the church. They apparently were a close knit group with many intermarriages. I know this is along post but could it be helpful in pinpointing my grandfather? Thanks for your assistance. It is greatly appreciated.

  • There are very few records for Ireland in the 1700s. Without some idea of where in Antrim James lived, it’s unlikely that it will be possible to trace him from paper records. DNA testing might throw up a living descendant today though.

  • Thanks so much Elwyn. I believe I might just try the DNA to see if it helps. I have been much more successful with my paternal side who were from England have gotten them back to the 16th generation....Skelton /Shelton family.

  • I dont know if this will help, however I found my town in fermanagh by searching the names of the people that confirmed my ancestors character on the immigration papers, it took me to the church where they were married and his parents buried.
