My ggg grandparents were Ned Donley and Margaret Doggit, who were married 23 January 1830 in Tullyallen in the Catholic Parish of Mellifont. They had at least 3 children born inTullyallen, Patt (16 March 1831), Antony (22 August 1833), and my gg grandmother, Catherine (23 April 1836). Any information about the Donley or Doggit families would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi again Bill,

You've been busy on your genealogy!

Marriage has Ned as Thos; no address for him but she is from Tullyallen. No parents' names of course!!

    Date of Marriage:29-Jan-1830
    Parish / District:MELLIFONT
    County:Co. Louth
    Husband
    WifeName:ThosDonley
    MargtDoggetAddress:
    TullyallenDenomination:Roman Catholic
    Roman Catholic

Couldn't find any other children than those you have

None of either surname in the Tithe Applotments & there are no Louth records in the Irish Censuses until 1901!

None of either surname in Griffiths Valuation in Louth either I'm afraid Bill.

  • Bill:

    Hello again!

I will alert our parish liaison for St. Peter's about your message. St. Peter's is the next parish to the east of Tullyallen.

  • Hi Bill / Colin/ Roger

I will have a better look tomorrow but it immediately strikes me the name is more commonly Doggett in this area, it is associated with the area you mention over to Slane in County Meath, oddly if you Google it there is a Sky series with a detective with the surname Doggett.

Occassionally you see Donley but much more common as Donnelly, some Louth sources here http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/ also search Donley, one hit I think but lots of Donnelly.

here is a link to the parish register and as you can see records beyond 1848 are not recorded here, http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0231

Is there any thing else that might assist, the local history society are here but do not I thik do genealogy.

www.midlouthhistory.com there is also a Facebook page Dunleer & District History but likely to be not too much about Melllifont on it. Mell is gaelic for honey as an aside.

  • Thank you all! I had found the parish register of the marriage, but due to the cursive handwriting managed to get almost all the facts wrong! Upon closer examination it turns out that the date of marriage really was the 29th, and what I thought was Ned is actually Thomas. It just goes to show that careful examination of primary sources is critical for genealogy!

By the way, don't listen to anyone who says anything negative about the internet! I started researching my family around 1982, and for almost 30 years I was only able to trace one ancestor back to Ireland. Everything in the U.S. said place of birth, Ireland, which is no help at all finding records overseas. Thank God for FamilySearch, Ancestry.com, and especially for the National Library of Ireland!
