Shanagolden parish is located just west of the ‘Golden Vale’, a picturesque part of Co. Limerick, surrounded by beautiful, agricultural land. We are a very active member of the national Diaspora programme, Ireland Reaching Out. We are delighted to welcome you to our parish.
Parish Introduction
The Parish is composed of the areas of Foynes, Roberstown & Shanagolden. It is located in the Shanid Division of Lower Connello Barony and comprises 3,663 acres. In 1831 the Town and most properties owned by T. Spring Rice. Many of the "Monteagle Emigrants" came from Shanagolden
The Shanid Historical Society is active in Shanagolden and parish baptismal and marriage records exist from 1824-1899.
Local Ireland Reaching Out Team
Our local team consists of John O'Connell from near Adare and Maryrose O'Shaughnessy from near Shanagolden. Without these two terrific researchers, we would not have a Shanagolden team! Patti is Parish Liaison for the parish. We hope to help you in your search for your Irish ancestors.
John O'Connell is a Mormon. His research skills are excellent, and he has had lots of training and experience because of his connection to the Mormon Church. John frequently answers Shanagolden queries that he sees online on the Ireland XO message board and actually meets many of the researchers when they've made trips to Ireland.
Maryrose O'Shaughnessy is less visible than our other team member, John O'Connell, but she is an excellent and valued researcher and knows the Shanagolden area and local people very well. Maryrose is an invaluable resource for our team!
History of the Parish
First mention of the parish is in 968 in the Annals of the Four Masters. We are located about 20 miles west of Limerick City, and Foynes forms an important part of the industry and geography of the parish as a port city on the Shannon. The Shannon River holds the deepest water in and around Foynes so it has always been an attractive place for cargo to arrive and nowadays Cruise Ships use it as a port of call. Perhaps we will see you here on your family vacation! Knockpatrick, supposedly consecrated by St. Patrick is also part of our parish.
