Powerscourt House is part of Powerscourt estate and gardens and is open to the public.
The house itself was built in the 1730s following the design of Richard Castle for Richard Wingfield. Castle was a noted designer and so his services were sought after. He is also recorded as the designer of Russborough and Carton House.
An earlier castle stood on the site dating from about 1300 and in 1974 extensive damage was done in a fire just before it was due to open to the public. The estate is known for its wonderful gardens where five terraces drop down to the Triton lake. The Sugarloaf mountain completes the majestic backdrop.
