Young Family from Reenturk, Saleen and Tarbert Townlands in Kilnaughtin Parish

We do not have any parish liaisons in North Kerry.

I looked at the 1911 census and there was only one Young family in the Tarbert area and no Mahony/Mahoney households. Whether they remained or emigrated is hard to say.

I looked at the online Irish phone book and there were no Young entries in the Tarbert area but this file is only a partial list of phone users. You may want to e-mail the Tarbert RC church and see if they have any knowledge of Young families in the area.

Thanks for getting back to me. My great grandfather George Joseph Young's family, including their mother, Mary Mahony, likely all left in the 1890's. All but one settled into Chicago. I've found many of the civil and church records on-line. I will make contact with St Mary's.

Mary Mahony (my great great grandmother), according to the wedding record was from Ballybunnion.

My trip is planned for some time in the early Fall.

Hi John, I descend from this family also.  My 3rd great grandmother was Jane Young.  She was from Reenturk and married Michael Fitzmaurice from Saleen in 1864.  Her father was Charles Young, and her brother George Young is the same person as your great great grandfather George Young, born 1835.  Michael, Jane, and their only child Patrick Fitzmaurice immigrated to the US in 1873 through Boston.  They lived in White River Junction Vermont near many other Fitzmaurice relatives who came from Kilnaughtin civil parish in Kerry.

George Young (1835) married Mary Mahony (1839-1926) on 18 July 1865 at St Mary's RC Church (Kilnaughtin Parish). Below is what I got from the marriage record. Perhaps the wittnesses are a clue to the mother's family.

It appears that the Young family followed the traditional naming conventions. George Young and Mary Mahony had the following children that I've found. Charles F Young (1867-1916), George Joseph Young (1869-1922), Jennie E Young (1872-1940), Anne Young (1874-?), Mary Young (1877-1947) and Michael Joseph Young (1880-1928). My best guess is that Jennie Young was named after the maternal grandmother and Anne Young would was named after her paternal grandmother. I'd love to hear your thoughts in this regard.

Hi John, sorry I've taken so long to get back.  I had a very busy summer at work.  But anyway, I found a marriage some years ago on irishgenealogy.ie for Charles Young & Anne Young, cousins.  They were married 23 August 1829, in the Church of Ireland parish of Kilnaughtin.  The other Youngs that seem to maybe be related are also Church of Ireland.  If George & Jane were born Church of Ireland, it might not be surprising that they married Catholics since Catholics were by far the majority.  If they wanted to stay Church of Ireland, they probably would have had a much smaller pool of potential spouses to choose from.  The same website has baptismal records for two of Charles and Anne's children, but they are not Jane nor George, James born 1834 & Susan born 1835.  I have Jane's year of birth at about 1845 & George's at about 1835.  I have had this Ann Young as Charles' wife since I found this record.  I tend to think this is correct, even though I haven't found George & Jane's baptismal records.
