I am trying to find out more about my Adam Uzell, born abt 1797, died 1879 Urlingford, and wishing to prove he was of Palatine descent. The surname of Uzell is spelled differently each time I find it: Uzele/Uzell/Uzelle/Euzell. This doen't sound like an irish name to me. If anyone can help me to throw light onto this name I would be most appreciative.
I have posted on other messageboards prior to finding the Kilcooley specific one, so apologies.

Dear LynneandJohn:
No apologies necessary!! The more the merrier. I have this copied to several volunteers in the Kilkenny area as well as the West Limerick area so you should see some replies.
As it is August, and many people may be away, please be patient. Give our volunteers about 2 weeks to respond. If you have not heard from anyone after that time, please email me at: jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.
All the best,
Jane.

According to this website http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Uzzell the surname is English, of French origin. In the census records the Uzells of Renaghmore put their religion as Church of Ireland and many Palatine families in the area were Methodists. They were interacting with the Palatine families in Kilcooley as in Griffith’s Valuations Adam Euzell is listed as renting land from William Smeltzer. http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&PlaceID=1248658&county=Tipperary,%20south%20riding&barony=Slievardagh&parish=Kilcooly&townland=%3Cb%3ERenaghmore%3C/b%3E
Uzell or Euzell is not listed on the Irish Palatine surnames of the Palatine Society. http://www.irishpalatines.org/about/name.html
Hope this is of some use.

Hi Minerva, and thankyou for your message.
My great great grandmother was an Elizabeth Uzell . In January 1867 she married a William O'Brien in Limerick City (St Munchins). On their marriage certificate her father is recorded as Adam Uzell, a Gardener. Later that year my great grandmother, Mary O'Brien, was born, but I have been unable to discover if she had any other siblings. However I have found a marriage in 1877 between an Elizabeth O'Brien, (widow) with a father, now shown as deceased, Adam Uzell. She is marrying an Adam Cooke in the Abglican Parish Church of Kilcooley. They both show their occupations as servants, and their residence as Renaghmore. If this is the same Elizabeth, and I think it is, then I have no idea what happened to William. I can find no record of any death.
From other information shared with me, I understand Adam had three brothers : Jacob, John and Peter. Peter emigrated to the USA.
The local landowner, William Barker, encouraged protestant Palatine refugees from western Germany, who at the time were suffering religious persecution, to settle on his Estate. Your information on the source of the Uzell surname would match with this. Cooke was also a Palatine surname.
Thank you once again for taking the trouble to reply, and if I have any info which may be helpful to you please let me know. I have looked for a record of Edward Uzell but cannot find him.
Best wishes,
Lynne
