CRINIGAN brothers of Westmeath, Ireland and Buenos Aires Argentina.
My Great grandmother Catherine CRINIGAN married James WALSH on 8 Feb 1857 in Ballynacargy, Westmeath, Ireland. I have found some information on the CRINIGAN family of Westmeath over several years.
There is a family history story that four uncles went from Westmeath, Ireland to Buenos Aires, Argentina. I found at the New York Public Library the book entitled "Los Irelandese in la Argentina" by Eduardo COUGHLAN , 1987 pages 197-198 .
It is a scholarly work and should be available in several Libraries in the USA and world wide. Although it is written in Spanish not English it is easy to read.
The book lists exactly four CRINIGAN brothers from Ballinacarrigy, Westmeath, Ireland.
The CRINIGAN family members who according to this book left Ballinacarrigy Ireland for Buenos Aires were as follows: Francis CRINIGAN, William CRINIGAN, Eugene CRINIGAN and Matthew CRINIGAN. The family tradition has always said that four brothers went to Buenos Aires, Argentina . I think these were the brothers of Catherine CRINIGAN WALSH and the uncles to her children. I think the timeline and the place of origin is right. Three of the CRINIGAN brothers married and had families in Argentina. It appears that Matthew CRINIGAN did not marry and did not have any children. All four CRINIGAN brothers died in Argentina.
Up until the early 1940s my mother's first cousin Elizabeth "Betty " ALLARD CONLON use to write back and forth with the children and grandchildren of the " Brothers CRINIGAN” in Argentina. The children and grandchildren were all very successful in Argentina. It was my understanding the brothers went out to Argentina under a scheme whereby if you tended a flock of sheep for several years at the end of your contract you were given half a flock. Since there were four brothers they collectively would have had two complete flocks. Is your James CRINIGAN and Catherine CRINIGAN WALSH related? I do not know. I have not yet found Catherine's death record or her baptismal record. Best wishes. MJ CAM

Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!
It looks like you posted this message as a comment to another message related to Crinigans. Hopefully, the other party will get back to you.
Did Catherine Crinigan Walsh live and die in Ireland?

I believe that she was born, married and died in Ireland. She married James WALSH in Westmeath in Feb 1857. I think she may have been a sister to the CRINIGAN brothers who went to Buenos Aires and possible also a sister to the party who wrote about James CRINIGAN .

I located four children of James Walsh and Catherine Crinigan who were baptized in the Milltown RC parish which is the parish to the west/southwest of Ballynacalry. Elizabeth 1857 Thomas 1859 Patrick 1861 Edward 1862 These records were on Roots Ireland but no townland was shown. Here is a link to the Milltown parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0952
I don't see James and Catherine in the 1901 census and I don't see a death record for them from 1891-1901.

Thank you so very much Roger for the great information and the link to the Roman Catholic records . Here is the notes that I have so far on their children:
James WALSH married Catherine CRINIGAN in Milltown, County Westmeath, Ireland on the 8 Feb 1957 .
James WALSH and Catherine CRINIGAN had at least 4 children possibly as many as 9 children born to their family:
Elizabeth WALSH LYNCH born 8 Dec 1857 She married Michael LYNCH circa 1894. Family tradition has always said that Michael and Elizabeth were married at Old St Patrick's in lower Manhattan. To date that record has not been found. There is a major effort to have the records of the NY Archdioese digitized but that will take several years. The digitized records will be on the Find my Past website. Michael LYNCH was the son of Michael LYNCH and Margaret KENNY both of Westmeath. They were married in 1866 in Westmeath, Ireland. Michael LYNCH the younger was born in Mullingar Westmeath, Ireland.
Mary WALSH ALLARD born ? August 1867 ? Married John ALLARD who was the son of John ALLARD and Margaret OWEN of Westmeath. They married in Brooklyn NY on the 19 November 1894. The witnesses to the wedding were Michael and Elizabeth LYNCH. So Michael LYNCH and Elizabeth WALSH LYNCH must have been married before that date.
*Catherine WALSH born 2 Nov 1867
Catherine WALSH* is listed on familysearch.org with this birth or baptismal date.
*There may have been another daughter / relative? Caroline (spelling?). Oral tradition says that "Caroline" married a Mr. PIDGEON( Spelling? Piggot?) and the PIGOTT and PIDGEON Family lived in or near Danbury, Connecticut, USA. Could Caroline be Catherine WALSH of family lore or are they two different people?
Bridget WALSH born 26 May 1871
The other children found on familysearch.org that appear to belong to this family are as follows:
Thomas WALSH, born 9 April 1859,
PATRICK WALSH born 5 Jan 1861,
EDWARD WALSH born 27 Dec 1861.
This would indicated that Patrick and Edward were born in the same year. It is possible.
There is then a five year gap between the birth of Edward and Maria.
Were there other children not yet found who were born during this time.
Family oral tradition says there were 9 children.Thank you once again

MJ:
Just returned from ten days in Ireland so I'm just getting to your message. I went back into Roots Ireland and modified my search routine and found four more baptismal record transcriptions. The children were Mary 1864 Catherine 1867 John 1869 Bridget 1871 and the Bridget record is below with a townland. There should be civil birth record images for any children born 1864 or later at www.irishgenealogy.ie
Let me know if you have questions.
