Hi,

I’m having trouble with my Martin family tree. My second great grandfather is James Martin May 5, 1860-Dec 14, 1946 and his wife is Margaret Nee Shine born Sep 25, 1877. I’m trying to find out who James Martins father is. Also I’m wondering if James was married to someone else before he was married to Margaret. From my records it shows that James married Margaret when he was 35 and she was 18. This seems like a large age gap to me. My Martin family always tells me that we have our own cemetery in Athlone. The Martins also owned a lot of land with a sheep farm. I’m not sure if the information that my family is giving me is accurate. I live in the United States so it’s hard for me to get more information about our Irish family.

Thank you,

Missy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below is a link to the 1896 civil marriage record (fourth record down) of Margaret and James which shows the names of their fathers (Michael was the father of James). The record also shows that James was a bachelor. I also included the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family.

  • Thank you I appreciate your help! So now I would just need to find the marriage records for Michael Martin and that should tell me who his father is also so I can keep going up the family tree?

Civil registration of RC marriages started in 1864. If James was 35 in 1896 then his parents would have been married pre-1864 and your only source would be church records and fathers names are not shown.

Possible baptismal record for James Martin. Ballybay is the RC parish just to the north of St. Peter's Athlone.

  • I have an ancestor whose name was Clement Martin.  This Clement Martin immigrated to Georgia, USA from St Kitts, Caribbean in the 1750s.  He was on the King's Council of Georgia from 1755 until 1776 when he died.  His estate included a homeplace in Georgia that he had named Athlone.  Thus I suspect this Clement Martain had family roots in the Athlone area of Ireland going back into the 1600s and early 1700s.  Can anyone enlighten me as to what Martin families might have been in that area at that time?  BobInUS
